I ordered the lot, but I’m most excited for the Trident Realms stuff.

You did the ā€œcompleteā€ / everything order? Nice.

I didnt have the foresight to plan for this very well.

I’m also just getting into Halo and my budgetary strength is now a bit divided…

I ordered the books (because of the lore and fun of reading through a physical book, got a companion subscription, so I don’t ā€˜need’ them) and the spell and artifact cards, because I liked them in 3rd as a reminder of which unit has which artifact/spell.

Surprisingly I was really tempted by the TR releases. Never been interested in TR, but the new models are pretty cool.

XE, not my cup of tea, but I like that this gives us an overarching storyline through out the 4th edition. It will be interesting to see what will happen to Pannithor. If, at the end, Morgoth reappears and makes Undead great again, everything is fine!

Do we know what’s in the ā€œslimline bookā€ that comes with the 2 player starter set? All the rules but no lore, or are things missing from the rules as well?

Core rules, a little bit of lore, how armies are built, but no lists or advanced rules. and only examples of magic items and spells. It’s just a 2-player starter booklet, mostly for new players. A handy and lightweight rules reference generally though!

Profiles for the units in the box are on separate sheets.

how much more are there in the advanced rules? Command Orders, Scenarios and something else?

Timed game, command orders, scenarios, complex cases & clarifications

Since we don’t know how things are pointed in v4 …

Going on existing points, the halfling one is around 1000pts - although I’m unsure it’s legal to take all the heroes at the same time?

TR one is about 800 and the TK 750ish

^ this is based just on unit in the boxes, no upgrades or using multibasing to get extra units.

Interesting comment from Kyle over on FB, regarding the new xirkaali warriors (the basic dog soliders which are shown based in 4s and 8s):

ā€œThey are heavy infantry and some are large infantry [the hunters/berserkers]. But get the notion of 5x2 or 5x4 etc completely out of your head as KoW models won’t be developed to fit a rank and file system that it doesn’t even use. Models will be developed to fit on their bases as it represents the unit. The Lionsnarl Cavalry for example, is a 4th edition regiment size for 3 models (not a troop). This would traditionally be a ā€œhordeā€ of 6 large cav. But there’s just no need to stick to those guidelines.ā€

I heard the same on counter charge podcast with Kyle, worth a listen BTW.

I noticed on fb the placoderms are 16 I the box.

The frost claws are 2 models when In my head you have it as 3. Just what we are used to.

It seems reasonable to me as it’s the base as you say, but we are all used to unit counting. Plus shrinkflation as well maybe a part. Even now I have units with 18 models and 34 and I feel like I need to hit 20 and 40.

Mantic’s reply to basing query.

ā€œUnit base sizes aren’t changing - but different numbers of models will fit on that unit base depending on exactly what they are.

There will be an appropriate number of models in each kit for any given unit, but many players will use a couple less and add cool diorama elements - which we absolutely still encourage! The main principle is that the unit base should still ā€˜look full’, and be clearly recognisable as to what it represents.ā€

I was going to open a new thread on this but here is my answer. I’m starting a new army and can start on the bases. I’ll wait for the final rules to see which unit goes on which base but the usual suspects (infantry troop, infantry horde, cavalry ā€˜regiment’ '….) stay the same.

Yeah, definitely a lot of cool things all at once.

I’ve been waiting for price commentary. I was a little surprised at the price hikes, which are close to +50% on what should be the value boxes (I think the uptick on Ambush boxes is particularly rough, turning a very spammable purchase (I own 3-4 of the Goblin box!) into more of a standard intro to the faction / game box), but honestly? These are the prices that Mantic’s competitors are charging (GW, Warmachine, etc) with the added pain of our current tariff hell tacked on.

Does that suck? Yes! Does it limit how much I’m buying from Mantic in the future? Vaguely! I find that’s more determined by how cool Mantic’s stuff is (I’m an adult with no kids and miniwargaming is my main hobby), and I think the quality of these preorders is quite a bit higher than what we’ve seen.

This isn’t me trying to defend exorbitant pricing, just that I can see why Mantic did it. The sticker shock is still totally justified, especially on what were loss leaders (the Ambush boxes and similar intro-to-wargaming sets).

As an aside, my problem right now is deciding if I want to own all or none of the new KOW books. I have so many pointless rule books for dead game editions, I really don’t want to pile up even more. With the rules all on the companion, that goes doubly so for these books :person_shrugging:

The goblin ambush set was such stupidly good value, any changes are always going to be disappointing! The hafling one, which has gone up by 50% for a 50% increase in models, was actually one of ā€˜poorest’ value - simply because of how the kit was made.

Plastics are still good value - or at worst comparable to GWs ToW ranges (not AoS). Resin models of quality are always going to be pricey, esp given the size of some of the releases.

Book wise, agree that an all or nothing approach is probably going to be quite common? I like a good hardback, but spend more time looking at Companion or pdf rules than ever would hard copy.

I’d really love a softcover rule book, so I can spiral bind it, but those launch so late in the edition that they aren’t much use to me :face_exhaling:

The one thing I haven’t seen mentioned are war machines in the new rules. Wonder if they are going to be tweaked?

Has anyone seen anything? curious they haven’t been mentioned if at all.

I just play at my FLGS but am curious. How do tournament organizers plan to incorporate the expansions books?
