That makes a lot of sense. (Found the rules for them)
Something like this then?
I understand this. Playing with surge is different and is something you would really want to choose or not. That said, playing undead is a really rewarding experience and a trope to fantasy wargaming so I would give new players this option.
Actually, undead is not my main army. I play a variety and did bring undead to my first KoW 4th edition tournament in germany a while back. Currently, the army I take to tournaments is ogres.
Ogres are a good army for small armies, but at 500 points the expensive heroes really take a cut out of the point allowance. I would chose this one, but it’s not competetive:
Blast means you cause that many wounds per hit, right? Or is it that you roll that many dice to wound per successful attack?
And does that say Red Goblin Blasters do d6 in melee and d3 at range? I hadn’t added any blast units to help keep complexity down, but I guess it wouldn’t be that much to add. I guess I also was leaving Blast out because most of those are siege and not all my mini armies have speed to deal with that, but at 12", that would be fine.
Goblin blasters are a great “gotcha” unit (which on second thought, makes them very unsuitable for beginner games). They only have three attacks, but each of these can multiply to up to 6 hits. If you can get a flank (which is doable in ogres) these 3 attacks increase to 6.
I’ve demolished a tree herder and zombie dragon with the humble blaster, dealing over 20 damage in a single go.
They are also notorious for blowing themselves up doing only two or three wounds, so they are not that reliable. In ogre armies they are great can-openers, dealing with high-defense units. Too bad, they compete with the new goblin chieftain for the support spot and these days the goblin chieftan wins that one.
If you want a more beginner-friendly list, this is one option:
It’s only got three units of which one is the traditional anvil (albeit with a light shooting attack) and one is a heavy hitter. The pipes of terror increase the brutal to (2), which is really fun.
That said ogres do better in armies that are slightly larger. With 600-800 points one can take the two required core and one character and have some points left over for something else. Expensive characters and (at least 130 pts) and core (130 points for a unit that only has 9 attacks) makes building a 500 point army hard. I chose the budget champion (@25 points more there’s the much more efficient -for this format- sergeant) and selected a slightly more expensive core options so you have both a hammer and an anvil.
