Bigger Base for warmachines and monsters - still acceptable?

In the last editions it was allowed to use characters, warmachines and monsters with bigger base. This was stemming from many Warhammer players using their miniatures for Kings of War mainly.

Edition 4 isn’t mentioning that it is still (officially) allowed. This will probably not change, but do you think it is okay? If you are still measuring view from a 50mm area in the center of the front, I can think of few advantages this could have for warmachines.

And monsters may hinder enemies to see models behind their bigger base, but there are way more negatives, like being easier to see, charge, gaining cover is more difficult, etc…

I’m not talking about more than twice the size, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see mammoths with a 100x150 base instead of 80x100 for example (GWs Ogre monsters would even fit on a Titan base by the way ) or warmachines with a 60x60 or 50x75 base.

The only part of the rules which covers larger bases is in the (terribly named) legacy bases bit right at the end of the book “You may also have the odd older model on an unusual base – just make it clear to your opponent what the model is and that it is different from normal.”

This does allow anything you already have on an ‘exceptional base size’ to be used without issue.

Potentially you can definitely ‘model for advantage’ war engines, given that LoS is drawn from anywhere on the front facing and nothing limits this to a 50mm section in the middle - although I’d still play it that way regards.

Regarding the mammoth, it’s not particularly clear from the new model teasers exactly how big the thing is, but given the slightly cramped pose and overhang, don’t think they’ve put it on a base bigger than the chariot one it’s currently given in the rules.

Well, there is a base size for the mammoth in the Companion and they mentioned it back in the news then. If it won’t be on a 80x100 base backlash is incoming ASAP…

You think “legacy” (battling with warlords called Warlord for most stupid wording) would also count for monster:thinking:

Does make bit more sense given the pic, but only 1 of the 2 mammoths is that size - the KoM one is still a chariot!

Mammoth is 80x100 (basically an infantry regiment) base. That was updated in Fracture.

KoM one wasn’t

Because the book has probably been printed/written with the Mammoth for ogres and Northern Alliance in mind.

KoM Mammoth is more of a Steamtank ‘count as’ so far.

So you get two units with the same name and identical stats, but one bigger than the other! Likely oversight??

Early version KoM mammoth at least had a ranged attack, so did the steam tank thìng

I hope this is an oversight indeed. “Our” KoM army has smaller war elephants, while ogres ride real beasts. This should not be the same unit entry.

Still, until the mammoth is a competetive choice, it doesnt matter that much to me! That said, I’d love a ranged attack again.

Ey, that was my Bluegre quote on Dortsche Krijgsheren! You stole it.

The mammoth having a bigger base is a good sign, although… From the pic it’s still too small and will still not be able to sit base to base with an enemy. I hope other monsters get bigger bases too. Looking in particular at slashers and terrors.

Slasher was on a chariot base once and the model was designed for that. Then Mantic decided to use the Slasher for plenty of models (there was a Salamander riding a model called slasher, despite having no entry called that in the list…) and most of them used to be Titans. This resulted in models not really fitting on their base.

Yeah I’ve played since 1st ed so am familiar with the old chariot Slashers.

It’s tricky as I like the standardisation of titans being 75x75 but really dislike overhang on models and how badly this effects being able to fight in combats.

I think a lot of monsters would look better on 75s like greater water elementals and tree herders and a lot of titans would be better on 100x100 like slashers, krakens and the big stone rhino that the abyssal dwarfs have.

The miniatures I have in mind were released in second edition or third, at least in 2018. Kings of War Monsters: Designing the Winged Slasher - Mantic Games

And at this point the other units entries it was later used for had another base. It seems like they didn’t really care if it actually fits or not.
