Wait, what?
Yeah, Herd are the most tricky ones as there are no models to build an army from as everything is just single models among other boxes or old metal models. So we improvise! (and chose a colour scheme that fits the Herd)
The Ravens without riders are used as Beast of Nature
Use the bows from the ice kin hunters and build 19 Succubi with bows, mix them with 4 regular ones (use the command options) for 2 regiments of 12 Trappers + 1 hero (with bow)
use 1 Succubus as Druid
the half-elf Berserker are mixed with Succubi for 2 regiments of 11
the remaining Succubi are used to make a regiment Spirit Walkers
The lower Abyssal are build with 2 handed weapons and make 3 regiments of 13 Longhorns
use the remaining Abyssal to make a Chieftain (you can use the horn arm from the succubus to symbolise the upgrade)
the Imps from the abyssal frames are used to make a Critters swarm
Optional:
Remove the tails, bones, skulls from the models to make them less demonic
If you see yourself as an advanced model builder, you can use the FotA Army Box as base an convert the Abyssal Horseman to Centaurs (PVC plastic glue is recommended here)
I found this thread based on it being referenced, very positively, in a February episode of the Mantic Universe podcast. A shame they didn’t namecheck you, but the review was enough for me to go and look for the thread.
It’s extremely useful, as a new collector - thank you. Gives a good A-Z sense of list building and considerations like what set, how much it will cost, and what is an ‘acceptable’ amount of kitbashing and ingenuity.
I have the Sands of Ahmnun set and need to build out both EOD and Ogres. I was going to buy the Ambush sets for both, and may still do that. Larger army sets might be better value in the long run, but there’s a lot to be said for the price of the Ambush sets, in any given week. They can be bought without the wife raising an eyebrow…
Specifically on the non-Mantic lists included here for KOM, mentioning Vitrix and Perry Miniatures…
The Perry 15th century models for Agincourt, and the ranges you’ve mentioned in your post, seem like one of the most cost-effective ways of building a KOM army, for those of us who don’t have a bunch of old Bretonnian models in a box up in the attic, or who aren’t involved in 3D printing.
Scale wise, are they a good fit for Mantic models? From what I’m reading online, they are, but just curious.
Generally I am of the view that it is right that Mantic models are purchased to support the company, but in the case of KOM, for reasons that are well known, there seems to be a better argument that there’s more of an expectation that proxy models would be used.
the Perry models fit the scale in general, they are a little thinner and more realistic, but this looks fine especially compared to the more bulky Northern Alliance humans so you get that human from the plains VS strong northmen fantasy theme
in general the KoM and Nigthstalkers are the budget friendly armies here, one because of cheap historical models, the other because of the modelling possibilities
and yes, the Ambush boxes are great value and a good way to expand an army if one prefers to slowly grow and army rather than buying it at once
Hey! So Chris, Mark, and I have been chatting recently and we were thinking it could make for good MUP short episodes to basically check every army like you did it here and offer some sample lists, and an overall practical guide on how to get started with them! We were thinking of 1st steps with an ambush list at 500 or 750pts, then bringing the list to 2k or 2300pts even.
Also include general considerations about the army, like how it plays, the lore, some themes you could do for your army, … anything potentially useful to someone who wants to get started with them!
We’re not sure yet about how exactly to structure the episodes to make them interesting, but we think it could become a series of shorts quite easily.
I think that sounds great Clem… I hope Kodos works with you on this, because this is a thread I have returned to again and again, it was a very practical and useful idea.
