Slow Grow Challenge: Abyssal Dwarves (#St.Augustin Kings of War Group)

Hello fellow plastic addicts

I heed the call for the slow grow army! Okay, to be fair it came to a pretty perfect time, because after a lot of decisions, overthinking and planning, I started a abyssal dwarves force just a few days ago.

It’s the first time I will go from list to models, and not the other way around. The list is 2300 pts, I’ll post it in the next days. For today my goal was simply to start this thread

I look forward to see other armies grow too, have fun everyone and let’s go!

This here is the list I’m going to build. I haven’t had very much encounters with AD before, so this is more less something which feels like fun and fitting for my first try.

  • Overmaster on Ancient Winged Halfbreed

  • Iron-Caster

  • Infernox

  • Black Souls Horde

  • Decimators Regiment (2x)

  • Immortal Guard Regiment

  • Abyssal Halfbreed Regiment (2x)

  • Grotesques Regiment

  • Hellfane

The most important part of my meanwhile 25 years of Tabletop Hobby is the freedom of creativity. I embrace the possibility to use whatever minis and style I like the most, which means I don’t stick to a specific company or official lore element. I have female emperor’s children for example :man_shrugging::slightly_smiling_face:

The whole army, including basing and decorative elements will be 3D printed. Something I never did before is starting with the whole basing work before I even have all models printed or painted. I plan to do a modular display picture with the army, or at least I will do this as long as it doesn’t slow me down significantly.

Here is, what I have put together so far, all the bases for the list are printed and have their first decorations. Next will be some mushrooms, plants and so on. My concept is to stay very dark and obscured in overall basing and minis, with some bioluminescence and light effects from Fire, magic, machinery…you get the idea.

This is all for for now, hopefully more soon

Looks great! I like your phrasing around buying minis for a lists and not making a list for minis. I’ve always done the latter! It’s a nice way to think about it.

Me too, I always started with “I have and/or wanna have this mini(s), what can I do with it?”. If it would’ve been only this thought counting, I thiiiink the army would be Trident Realms or FoN. But they were so unattractive for playing in third, I dismissed it. And I was drawn to (evil) dwarves in a few ways, so here we are

Nice idea for the basing.

I’m doing AD as well - in my case painting up a load of stuff I build 18 months ago before getting sidetracked by another project!

I’m also way less discerning when it comes to army planning - I just build a whole bunch of models I fancy doing, when try to make a list out of it at the end!

I can give a glimpse for the first casual force, my Blacksouls. The STL files (for those not familiar with 3D printing, that’s the file format for the models) are from dakkadakka.store, from their Grimworld Kickstarter. They’re the “Voidland dwarves”, and I really like the menacing presence of the helmet designs and the little skulls beads in their beards. They don’t have anything in common with the classic Chaos Dwarves, which is exactly what attracted me. I don’t really like the most evil dwarves designs, so I was happy to find them

I will do my first horde/2 regs with the default weapon and shield equipped, but the STLs are completely modular (like in a sprue), so maybe I’ll do the cs1 version too one day.

That’s what they look like today.

The Voidlanders look good, I dig the Iron Golem-style helmets (from Warcry). I see DakkaDakka makes bull centaurs too!

They do, and they are my Halfbreeds  already printed, but put aside while I do Blacksouls and Immortal Guard

Heyo, I have a minor update while I’m trying to find out what would be the best next step to work on. Logically, it’s finishing the bases (close gaps, add smaller debris, test place some flora), but also I’m not really in the mood. The other things are working on the Black Souls, which I prefer, so I tried different light colors for their eyes/helmet eye slits. Initially I wanted a bright, cold and soulless blue, but didn’t achieve a good result. So I changed to a reliable alternative, purple. As long as it works with the dark and blue base scheme that I’ve planned for the bases, I’m happy. The Black Souls still lack some colors, but it’s coming together satisfying

Slow grow continues, the Blacksouls are coming along shade by shade. Here’s a pic of the unit so far

The Weapons are still missing, some beards need detail, but overall I think I can finish them in the next days. There are a handful more of them which are still grey, they’ll follow shortly.

Just to give a sign of life, I have printed and assembled my Hellfane. Those here familiar with World of Warcraft, especially the. Burning Crusade, might recognize the design  Creator is Imagine Minis

I scaled it down to 90%, which is perfect for the Titan base. Not sure how the base decorations will fit, but we’ll see. Behold, Optimus Prime Hellfane Fel Reaver

I did some priming today, while I wait for some ordered colors to arrive which are necessary to finish the Blacksouls. I try to loose my fear of using the Airbrush (or better, loose the fear of cleaning it  ) so I primed a lot of stuff with it. Decimators, Immortal Guard, the iron-caster, and the Hellfane. I don’t think primed minis are worth detailed pics, so here’s a small glimpse.

The first Blacksouls are finished, except their shields (I’ll do them all together when there’s space on my table), which means I have to finish the first bases. I primed them and did a first drybrush. The picture doesn’t capture it this well, but I am more or less fine with it so far. They’ll get a dark wash soon, and then the hard part comes: Placing the flowers and mushrooms and osl’ing their glow, in relation to the position of the Dwarves.
