V-Dawgs Dorks with bows (and Wip)

Yay, another army project. I guess this first project would fit better in the army list section of the forum, but for reasons that will soon become clear this project is not about making a good army. It is about making perhaps one of the more unusual and worst armies that exist in Kings of War. Lets just hope it will be great hobby fun all the way!

Before you read any further, if you are an orc-player you should look away now. Just log off or at least close this window. I am warning you, what comes now will make you cry. Last chance… close this window!

Anyway, lets start. I have never considered myself an orc player. I find them brutal and simple, and frankly I dont even like to play with models on 25mm bases. But there is one type of unit i really like. I am talking of course, about the orc skulks. And this got me thinking. What if an orc skulk army existed?

And then something else happened. I found a great page (https://dataanddice.com) that collected data about tournaments and how the different races did in Kings of War, and the results from Clash of Kings UK 24 was published and analysed (2024 UK Clash of Kings: Dwarfs Defy Expectations in a Stunning Victory – Data and Dice). And this picture caught my eye:

Just look at that beauty! The poor orcs. Really just scraping by, being the absolute worst army at the tournament. What if something (bows?) and someone (me) could restore them to glory?
I’m just kidding of course, orcs with bows are terrible, it has to be what they are worst at, but still, I am going to make a SHOOTY SKULK ARMY! And I am planing on bringing them to Clash of Kings UK 25, and it will be my first all Mantic army! And I have one goal and one goal only, to not end up in last place.

So far i have made the army in Mantic Companion and i will post it here later. I have bought an orc mega army deal, and I have ordered bases for several skulk units.

Now for the theme: Well they are skulks, they need bows, and the are skulking and hiding in terrain. I will try to paint this as fast as i can, but it usually takes med 2-3 years to make an army, so i will need to take some short cuts. All the bases will be made first, at the same time, and I will try make a river that can run trough most of them. There will also be Skulk Chariots, Wip and his orcling friends, and probably at Krudger on Winged Slasher with a war bow.

Wish me luck!

Crazy timing, I just noticed that Skulk Chariots unlock this morning and had a similarly stupid thought  I will however content myself with living vicariously through you * Best of luck in the coming struggles.

*Except I’m still printing an Orc arrer boyz warband for Mordheim, where they are similarly Not Good but Also Hilarious :bow_and_arrow:

Haha, I agree. Nice timing indeed. I have 5 regiments of skulk chariots in my army.

Good luck with the error boys in Mordheim!

Absolutely correct spelling

I was tinkering with Skulk lists after you posted and really impressed by how much Skulk Raider stuff was injected into the Orc list last COK! That virtually nobody has done anything with but still a crisp high five for the RC for trying something new.

I know, right!

I hope i can finish this before orcs becomes riftforged (and no one has a bow)

This is a fantastisk idea @V-Dawg . Norway needs more orc players, welcome to the best and coolest faction!

Remember to include a flagger with the strength in numbers aura. He gives Rampage attacks to the Heavy infantry ranged skulks as well

So… Just remember , to be an orc army player, is as you said, not about winning, but to have fun. :joy:

Thanks. I’m really focused on this project now but I am waiting for my bases and some accessories for them. Also i need to go outside and collect some small rocks.

Flagger is in! And so is the skulk hero with wild charge aura to all units with the tracker keyword.

So far war drum is out (too noisy), but i might need it considering the whole army is def 3 and 4 with low nerve

(I definitely put two in my list, De 3+ 13/15 are victim stats otherwise)

You are probably right. I will add ONE! A good friend of mine recomended to build a bonfire with orcs making smoke signals.

Pretty sure the Skulk Stalker can’t have an item and be a Raid Leader :grimacing: Also I gave the Flagger boomstick in my list to slavishly stay on theme :gun:

Oh wow. Shouldn’t the Mantic Companion tell me about things like that?

Now I basically have 5 points to spend and not a single unit is good enough to deserve it :joy:

Boomsticks sound kinda noisy? I think i might need bane chant more

I went with ‘Orcs What Shoot’ as the theme over ‘Orcs What Sneak’

This will be my army.

I will try to tie the bases together with a river/stream.

What do you think, should it be straight like this? Or bend a little more? Should it split into smaller streamt instead?

Maybe a bend could look more dynamic, but I think spitting depends. Shallower and smaller resin pours are easier imo if that’s the direction you want to go, but working with glossy vs matte finishes on small little crevices can be frustrating if you want to use glossy translucent paint.

You are touching on important issues here. I guess its too late to bend it now as I have started to work on it (see picture).

Im not sure what I want to do to create water. I have never used resing. I am thinking relatively shallow water, with stones and maybe fish. I was hoping i could achieve a good effect with painting the bottom of the river and then apply glossy mod podge in thin layers, maybe create some foams and swirls too.

If I do go the resin route I will have to seal successfully a lot of bases, and I’m not sure I will be able to do it.

What do you think?

I think shallow can work great and the method you mentioned with mod podge sounds effective, especially a little white or pastel paint mixed in for some extra foaminess! If you want to experiment with resin, I think cheap is fine - the US$30 Woodland Scenics resin from arts and craft stores hasn’t failed me yet unless I get too ambitious.

Worst case if you decide to shift it a little cork is not terrible to cut out of super glue/pva with a sharp knife and patience imo. Either way I’m excited to see the results of so many units with coherent basing, it’ll definitely be eye-catching lined up!

Edit: On the topic of sealing resin, just painters tape on the inside and lego bricks around the tape has served me perfectly!

@hairyhalfling Thanks a lot for all the tips and help.

I guess I now have some important decisions to make… Not sure what to do yet, but there are a lot of other stuff to do while I think about it. I need to build a bridge and add more stones and stuff

Progress…

Looking good so far. I have stopped using resin pours, and started using UV resin instead. A lot more control than resin pours, and dry within secounds with a UV light. You can buy UV resin in bulk from temu etc for cheap, that is as good quality as the expensive stuff. I seal of the resin with blu tack, and remove it as soon as the resin is cured from the UV light. You can even mix a little bit of acrylic paint or resin color dye to give the water the colour you want.
