Work In Progress two Kings of War troop size bases suitable for 10 infantry models, built for my latest unit: a regiment of Viking Hirdmen with pike and shields that are also in progress. I really love making these sort of diorama scenic bases, out of bits and bobs I’ve found along the way
I’m further along on the bases, with a high tide marked in rotting seaweed, dunes painted and course sea grass scattered about the hill. I’ve also been building up the waves.
WIP 2 bases (for either Hail Caesar or Kings of War Regiment ) for my latest batch of 20 Viking Hirdmen, (also work in progress)
An unusual question arises though.
Should i position the troops defending the shoreline or invading it?
Always before, it’s been a no brainer. My Celts would follow the example of myths and legends, and it’d be their hero champion defending the ford against a raiding neighbourhood tribe trying to steal cattle.
However, this time it’s the sea, and not a river, and they are Vikings, so i’ll probably position them the other way around.
I find myself a little short on Jarls for my Viking army, but my Northern Alliance army has heroes to spare, as does my Celtic army has an abundance of druids. Therefore, I’ve absconded the black priestess which id been inspired from the TV series Vikings anyway when I painted her. Also, my original Barbarian figure before it was replaced by tge real Orlaf the Barbarian, making my Bloodbowl Norse Barbarian obsolete. Also, another model which was lacking a suitable home was King Richard the lionheart. With some work to remove the knightly shield from his back and a better axe head.
Also, I’ve been busy with my Kings of War Northern Alliance Huscarls. I never liked the Thrud The Barbarian-esque tiny headed Huscarl, nor their impractical weapons and shields, so i put some bearded Dwarf heads on them, and replaced their weapons and shields.
The waves look great Nav! What did you use for them?
Many thanks Findol. On these, i used nomorenails as i had some handy, but i’ve used silicone sealant before too. although that can be a bit smelly.
nomorenails also works on foamboard which can be a bonus too,
It is unfortunate that when I’ve finally got a second troop or regiment of Huscarls that they are being excluded from the new look Northern Alliance army in Kings of War. However, thankfully i can still use them in Hail Caesar. The 13 Humber Berserkers from The Game of Thrones that i recently bought in a sale look well as an alternative model, good and sturdy for a Heavy infantry
Added to my original Warlord Games Viking Lord, I’ve added 2 more warriors, a battle standard bearer and a female shaman preistess /völva
With the last regiment of my Vikings now completed ( mostly from Warlord Games Starter set) it’s starting to take shape. It is fully compatible with Kings of War or Hail Caesar, and I also bought the Dark Age supplement Shield Wall this weekend.
I’ve yet to work out points for KoW Kingdom of Men or Historical version but I field tested them against my Atlantic Dark Age Irish and they did well, although timing seems essential for changing from open order to Shield Wall
my Huscarls are again causing me trouble. No Heavy Infantry in Kingdom of Men, so I might have to go with Varangur after all, but they lack in other ways.
Three sprues of Victrix Vikings is enough to make a troop of Bondi, a troop of Hirdmen, a Battle Standard Bearer and a pretty decent Thegn/Lord too.
Late to the party and just caught up with this thread, but it’s inspiring work! Scavenged bases are always fun. I particularly like the lifebuoy.
The semi-naked guy with the 2 swords, axe and eyepatch makes me think of Cohen the Barbarian from Discworld.
Many tanks @FutaManticore I do enjoy slipping in little quirks into my bases, or something to link the army together, like mushrooms in my Goblin bases, or Crows/Ravens in my Vikings, (I’ll need to buy more of those!) I’m not nearly the best painter, aiming for Table ready rather than masterpiece, but i enjoy making them,
Ah yes, Cohen the Arthritic barbarian, with his wooden teeth. A great character concept from a master wordsmith.
