4th edition leaks and rumors

It would appear that lists dropping in the main rulebook, for 4th, are somewhat “temporary lists”, albeit they could last several years.

I say that because we’ll have a consolidated dwarf list, but we know Mantic’s intention is that when the turn of the Dwarves come around for a book, Matt said they would split them out again.

And it appears that many units which are currently gone could be worked back in (same pdocast).

But I guess I have in mind that Mantic must surely be intending “the Twilight Kin treatment” for a number of factions, for example Forces of Nature and Elves…

I would be disappointed if the Elves we get are just conventional ‘high fantasy’ Elves, with the usual tall helms, white cloaks, leaf-adorned armour and whatnot. I don’t know that they can radically change the way Elves are, based on existing lore, but give that we know the narrative is going to jump forward a considerable number of years, potentially you could have something like… Elves driven from the homeland, reduced to a grimy shadow of their former glory, a sort of nomadic locust-like society forced to desperate measures by the pressure of the Xirkaali? Perhaps to the extent that they forge ties, again, with their Twilight Kin brethren, against a common enemy?

When it comes to Sylvan kin, tricky to reboot them or make them a unique IP. Hard to see how to flip the “wood elves” trope - which, in fairness, goes back beyond GW and into folklore.

I’m not saying they have to be that, just making the point if Mantic want to create a “Mantic elf IP”, they’re gonna have to come up with at least some kind of new spin on things.

For the Forces of Nature, it’s a little easier, because the main option they can take is just to decide that it’s not a smorgasbord of units from many different factions, and just lean heavily into Herd and magical creatures of nature.

Curious what Mantic do with dwarves eventually, too. The consolidated dwarf list will probably look a lot like 3.5 dwarves… But what might the dwarves of the future look like, when Golloch’s activity has fundamentally impacted the nature and fortunes of the Imperial Dwarves?

I love this dumb thing. One of my clubmates hates it, so a few of us are threatening to run it in multiples (including in non-Halfling armies) just to spite him

Hmmm…
My dwarf army needs a flame bealcher too.

I feel like if these guys go onto the battlefield in wheelchairs, then surely Trident Realms should be wheeling their Krakens out in giant wheelbarrows, or enormous basins of water… Just saying…

I see. If it’s a army leading character, then I would use the rules for Zuinok until the refresh comes.

Thinking more about it. The old attack multiplier version of duelist might have been pretty obnoxious when people have invested so many points into each character and a good bit of their army flavor comes from the commands.

An kraken in a glass aquarium would be a high stakes resin pour for sure.

To an extent Mantic possibly have given a steer for how they see elves with the TK? Tall, lythe, gangly types - just hopefully with less ‘staying alive’ dance poses!

There could have been an ancient beast patched up by elven smiths, and given flight again by harnessing the power of an air elemental…

But no, we get a naff fat pet in a chair.

Not the same thing.
Others like it and we don’t have to buy it.

Reasonable take/hyperbole

I think it is quite “naff”, it reminds me of dad humour. But that’s why I like it. The irreverence…

Since the halflings already have a mechanical pig, a troll pushing a lawnmover, air balloons, angry chefs and a magic system based on food i wouldn’t look at the list for dark gritty fantasy vibes.

It isn’t my cup of tea, although i do like the wing replacement drakon.

Hi

I know individual character’s bases are changing (growing bigger).

But was there any mention of other base size changes?

Looking at painting up my Wyrmrider centurion and just want to check if the base size is going to change before I start

From existing units Heroes are the only ones that change.

Depth Horrors got a bigger base as well with the new models but those being the only ones as far as we know

I think any withdrawn models that might come back might reappear with altered base sizes, wasn’t that mentioned lately as a possibility…

I haven’t seen much evidence of online retailers having 4th ed up for pre–order.

My go-to options in the UK all have them at 20-25% off - Goblin Gaming, The Pit, Wayland Games?

Right there with you. My usual go to merchants have zero 4th ed content on their sites.
