In my head that was more positive as in "The app is awesome and we can’t go back to trusting out own arithmetic and reading out own handwriting. "
I’ve not actually ever used allies and I have suggested that new players ignore the validation so we can get models they have to the table or try a unit that intrigues them. But players seem to not like “cheating”.
Mantic updated the post with a v brief Basilea example and have said that some will be given airtime on podcasts in advance of release.
Main hope is that the 4 armies in Invasion are still balanced with those in the rulebook (yeah, slightly odd approach! ) and everyone isn’t just hankering for new toys/command orders right from the off.
Understandable not to include rules for allies (although their presence in v2 is entirely why i have so many armies!) and easy to just add an extra battalion into list building if required.
On that front, hope Elliott Barratt is primed with Companion v4, since list building is now potentially across a couple of battalions in the same list, with lots of restrictions etc!
One thing that i’m looking for in 4th edition is that if we’ll get boxes with bases for multi-basing/diorama basing in mind. I don’t know about most other people on this site, but i prefer that over individual square bases. picking up 1 big square of miniatures compared to individually moving them on a tray feels more good for gameplay. I also wonder if we’ll get more options for weapons and parts for miniatures on sprues. The inevitable kingdom of men (i’m hedging my bets on them being based on the warhammer fantasy empire of man 1700s pike and shotte era style army) release should have options for guns, bows, or swords.
oh cool, thanks for the info. most of the boxes that i have from older releases, but i look forward to buying new ones once i get through my older sets.
Comment from Kyle P on FB regarding the expansion books:
“As future supplement books come out, the lists will be reprinted with the factions in those books. This will be a time to give new models to those factions. And they will be updated in the companion when those books release as well.”
@TheGrizzly617 the Ambush sets and newer army releases have all come with mdf unit bases. Also, barring the original models, they no longer have an integral base, so far easier to do that way. Some of the Nightstalkers models even had little scenic bits for basing included.
Many of the newer plastic kits have alternative weapon options - the goblins for example have bows and spears or hand weapons and shields (similarly halflings with guns instead of bows). Halflings also have upgrade parts in the Vault for a couple of further units using the plastic kit.
Took a pass at aligning Basileans to the new structure, and you can see I started to trip over the many, many heroes and how they might shake out (vs the general lack of monstrous and titanic support in the faction). I also might have been over generous with core vs spec but
Certainly based on the background, the Basilean army is a core of men at arms, supported by paladins and the Sisterhood - with elohi and OPG being far less common (although it is mentioned that they might march on mass led by one of their captains?).
Do think the lower tier wizards, priests and more ad hoc heroes will possibly get a support slot, rather than a Champion place.
Will be interesting to see how the (n) limit they reference gets used - again this might be dependent on choice of Warlord or Champion?
That was my original thought … then I stumbled over the huge number of Basilean heroes and started to wonder if the shrimpy little support casters might appear under Support for at least some factions? I literally don’t know but the exercise was illuminating!
Quite like the battalion concept and I do think it’s clearer than what we have.
Reminds me a bit of Bolt Action?
As someone said on Fanatics, it never really made sense to end up facing off against forces that are spamming particular units.
Although we don’t have updated lists yet, I think intuitively we can probably guess quite a lot where better units will land. My ogre siegebreakers and abyssal berserkers won’t be core, etc
Im expecting stuff like Nagari, red goblins to be support?
Minor characters could end up fewer on the tabletop also, but I’m a bit “meh” about that. Maybe no loss in immersion terms.
Thanks I didnt know that. I was looking to get some of the of the new boxes. I always loved doing kitbashing with wh40k minis, like cutting the space marine knees so they could kneel down or hacking off their magazines from the old bolter minis so I could have them reloading. Sounds like I’m going to have a lot of fun with the newer boxes once I run through these older ones.
something I thought about the last days is how heroes might turn out
with a maximum of 4 per battalion most of us will end up with with more hero models than needed, while at the same time my guess is that there won’t be as many different ones in the army lists as there are now simply because you don’t need all this choices any more (Auras moving to Command Orders, a hero that was there for the Aura only is not needed any more)
and with the addition of bigger bases, there is the opportunity to just combine heroes we now have onto a single base so this works all out much better than initially thought
one problem here is that Mantic doesn’t really offer any unit bases to buy on their own
there are the plastic movement trays but they are still trays and don’t really fit with the MDF bases from the boxes
and it might sound strange but there are regions were MDF bases aren’t easy to get and like for me it is easier and cheaper to order plastics (clear acrylic or white HIPS) and have it cut in pieces than getting matching MDF bases
So something I would really like to see, given you work with Archon, being a more scenic but still generic plastic frame that can be glued into the different base sizes needed
Archon sells Dungeon Tiles with a “click” system that looks almost perfect for KoW bases (almost because it has an RPG grid modeled on and therefore the tiles are wrongly sized) and they now have the option for pre-painted plastic
My wish for future add-ons would be to have a frame with scenic parts with 4 infantry troop bases, the connectors to link them into regiment/horde and some additional stripes to expand them into large infantry and chariot size (so an infantry regiment would be 2 large parts, a cavalry regiment 2 large and 2 small parts, a hero 2 small parts etc) with the option of those being pre-painted (would simply depend on the cost) as I think this is the next step (or missing link) to make KoW more accessible for new players
The new battalion system was briefly discussed on the Direct Misfire interview - and someone mentioned that it would prevent people playing lists which were, on the face of it, a little improbable… Such as where the list involves 3-4 powerful dragon riding heroes, at the expense of more pedestrian units.
But aside from blocking those dragon-heavy lists, or armies that are built of a theme of “taking the best things in the list, in volume” … I must admit a personal peeve is my son’s penchant for playing as many individuals and monsters as he can manage. At times, I’ve looked across the board and felt like I was playing an “Age of Sigmar” game.
So, yeah, if the game’s trajectory were to a reset where there are fewer individuals running around, and more units, I would be down for that !
I make a slight exception for Ogres - maybe it’s because they’ve always been chunkier boys, but it’s felt more thematic for them to have large-based individuals running about.
Re basing - I’d potentially see an expansion of the 3d printed Champions bases that are available in the Vault?
Characters. We know that there are Commanders, which are either Champions or Warlords - and these are limited to 4 per Battalion. However it’s still possible that some of the current hero types (wizards, priest, the solo assassin/hunter types etc) might fit better into the Support category?
This would potentially help list that currently have a large number of hero options - undead & basilea have 15 inc LLs, AD 14 etc.
So we knew that there was an extra pivot on certain movement orders - but these were unspecified.
As nimble units get an extra one on the charge, I’m pretty sure that other units only get a single one - otherwise 3 pivots on the charge just gets silly??
