I have a question about the Aegis Shield upgrade for Basilean ships. If I understand the rules correctly this is only useful in bigger games with with large and extra large ships right? I mean, for example if I only play using the starter set (Basilea and Orcs) there is no way any of these ships can do 10 or more damage from a single shooting attack, since criticals don’t count. Do I understand this correctly?

Don’t forget Raking fire and Point Blank attacks!

Raking Fire can add, double or even triple damage depending on range and direction. Regular Point Blank fire Doubles the damage. There is high probability of being hit for more than 10 damage when facing an Elohi, Hammerfist and/or a Boomboat. These are all pretty capable of dealing 10+ dmg with a single salvo without much effort. That is not to say the Aegis Shield is a best upgrade, just that it will eventually kick in at some point in the Starter game.
