Does anyone know when we can expect the rules for KoW Champions to hit the Companion website?
Not anytime soon, they didn’t plan for it and also see no need for it after being asked.
So maybe at a later point, but than it would be still just rules only, no unit stats
Hm, that’s disappointing.
Armada had rule book but the ship cards were in the ship boxes, not the book.
That did eventually make it’s way into the Companion, so possibly Champions does the same thing - but won’t be soon.
Similarly the Champions themselves won’t be sold separately for a while at least.
I understand why they are doing it and there are advantages and disadvantages of not having the rules there.
It being a boxed game there is also the factor of the new player experience that nobody gets an advantage by not releasing things online
on the other side there would be a larger player base at the beginning of the full rules were available
in the case of Champions I don’t mind because the game is a stand alone thing for new players, so buying a box for either an army were you need the models, or a faction you always wanted to collect but not full 2000 points isn’t that bad
far more important than the companion is to get translations out as this is much more important to get new people in than online rules
I’d be happy with a PDF of the rules. I’m sure I can ask Mantic for them.
Just feels a little strange that a new game wouldn’t have at least a digital rulebook on the companion, even if a PDF.
I don’t know how Mantic handles translations but I’m sure they don’t have the same people updating the companion and doing translations.
But without the rules, how are people supposed to be play this? I bought one of the $50 boxes for the game, so I expect the cards for those units in the box.
They are selling the rulebooks and tokens seperately as well offering the starter set.
I assumed there would be some quickstart rules with each company set, but maybe not… anyone know?
As far as the conpanion goes… I’m sure the rules will end up there eventually, but if they were on there you’d get quite a lot of the exisitng player base just using existing models and proxying in a model for the hero. People talking about it on Fanatics as it is.
From a Mantic point of view that would be not much use. Having an expanded player base might boost visibility but if quite a few of them paid nothing at all, not sure that is a model for success!
I guess eventually the people really desperate not to pay will watch enough battle reports and see enough material to figure out the game independently. Much easier to jusy give Mantic some money, but … nowt queer as folk.
Based on everything I’ve heard/read so far you’d need the rule book and a company box - the latter doesn’t include the game rules, the former doesn’t have the unit rules.
I mean, people are paying monthly/yearly for the companion. I also prefer electronic rules to paper rules.
People who want to proxy will do it either way.
Anyway, the store page for the rules links to the companion, so I’m hopeful that will mean something.
Putting the rules into the Companion wouldn’t hurt, but as it wasn’t planned it may take a while
As far as I know there is currently just one person doing the companion, and they are working on adding Halo to it.
I am not sure if the core rules are in the company box, I have heard contradictory
But you are definitely missing some markers like the terrain and the background.
I agree they should offer the rulebook for purchase as PDF. I suppose it’s possible the decision not to is an effort to avoid pirating, but that will (unfortunately) happen either way.
As for the Companion – it’s very cheap and covers many existing games… But not clear why if Mantic have spent money developing and bringing to market a new game, they should be obliged to include it from the outset.
If they did, but said the price of the Companion was going up, I bet that would cause ructions too…
The truth is, the folks that think they should get the Champions rules on the basis that they’re contributing in the shape of the Companion - which is a pretty minimal financial commitment - probably are going to be proxying like mad and won’t be buying many of the Company sets either. Can understand why Mantic don’t accomodate them right away.
the problem with the companion is more about a single person maintaining everything and currently already adding another game to it, over anything else.
the Champions rulebook page on the Mantic web store mentions that free rules are in the Companion…
Problem for those people solved then!
Reading Ronnies tariff note, it appears there are Companion upgrades, PDF offerings and at least one new app (HALO) on the way.
Tariffs will be a pain for US purchasers of HALO products it appears…
Mantic may be able to do something by finishing the products in the UK.
Right now I’m sure they receive a complete copy of the Halo game in the retail box from China with all the printed materials and PVC models.
I’m not an expert on tariffs but I do believe they can receive the PVC models in the UK on the “frame” and then do the final finishing work, packaging, etc.
