Dan's Ogre Army: 2026 KOW Slow Grow #kowslowgrow2026

Alright, it’s been a while but I’m finally back at it. As expected, I spent the week after my last post painting for Adepticon (14 bases for Epic Warpath & five miniatures for Firefight) as well as playing practice games of EW & FF and my first game of KoW. I ended up using a friend’s Ogres and had a blast - and Grok is a beast (he charged into the flank of some Palace Guard and 1 shot them).

My intention was to continue KoW hobbying, but my daughter shared her germs with me (she had the flu & pneumonia) and I spent the weekend before Adepticon resting (it was also my birthday). Adepticon was awesome and I plan to go back next year. I only played maybe 5 games of Firefight previously and learned a lot getting my butt kicked by some great players.

However, in Epic Warpath I went 3-0 and finished 2nd w/ my Enforcers. Yay! I beat a plague army w/ a Collassus super heavy round 1, Forge Fathers w/ a Hrungnir Magma Destroyer (which dropped a building on one of my heavy weapons teams the 1st round - ouch) and a GCPS army, also without a super heavy. Three great games with some fun opponents and I scored a Firefight starter box as my prize.

As for my progress, I’m very close to finishing six shooters, with four warriors and two boomers right behind them. I expect to have them completed tomorrow, which will give me 6 shooters, 12 boomers & 12 warriors ready for basing. I plan to do some creative basing and probably only use five models for a regiment, but using the full model count, I calculate I’ll have just over 1k points of painted models.

Next up are 12 Siege Breakers and a Giant I primed up tonight. I’d like to build some Hunters, but I don’t love the Mantic models (they look to be the older style and not updated when the newer sprues were released) and they tend to run $45 for 3 models, which seems expensive. I’ll figure something out.

I had the Ogre champion, standard and some crocodogs printed from the vault and added to the queue.

I like a bit of a gamble now and then and bit on the KoW Mystery Battalion box - purchasing two and receiving double Ratkin. They were supposed to be different, so Mantic kindly sent me an EoD army as well. To the shelves of opportunity they go.

I love a deal, so for $75 I picked up the following at Adepticon: 2 copies of the K47 Intro set, Battletech Essentials, EoD regiment, terrain crate City Accessories & the Hametsu hardback rulebook by Black Site Studios. I’ve been intrigued by K47, but I don’t really need another game system (as we all say).

Only one unit finished this week, but he’s a beaut!

I picked up some Conquest boxes that I’m going to try kitbashing with. W’adrhun Blooded for Berserker Braves and Hunters for Hunters. I’m planning to use Mantic heads and some other bits. fingers crossed

I spent the beautiful weekend playing outside with a dead pine tree. I need to cut up the remaining branches, stack it and cut down the stump, but I’m happy with the progress.

Two regiments of siege breakers completed this week.

I need to start basing. I have 14 troops and one ogre ready for basing:
12 Siege Breakers
12 Boomers
12 Warriors
6 Shooters
I’m looking at picking up unit trays from shogun miniatures for combining troops into regiments.

Paint is on everything that was assembled, so I’ll start cleaning mold lines, assembling and priming the following:
Grok (I don’t like the look of the old ogres and his model has such skinny legs - maybe I’ll skip him and just use the Warlord model)
Warlock
Warlord
Berserker Bully
Boomer Sgt
6 Chariots

I’m thinking I’ll just buy Arok’s STL and have her printed. I do have the vault upgrade bits printed for the champion and standard, which I could use for a Sgt and Army Standard (must have all the leader options) and will pick up the Matriarch at some point.

I played three games of KoW yesterday at a gaming event by the Battle Pilgrims in Cherry Hill. A friend lent me his Salamanders army and I played two games against Trident Realms and a third game against Salamanders. Fun day of gaming and learning.

I hit a bit of a lull and didn’t feel like doing much. Between celebrating birthdays (wife, mom, niece and multiple friends), a backpacking trip and long weekends with family, I didn’t hobby much in the past month.

I finally made some progress and took some pictures.

I finished up 5 leaders: Grok, Warlock, Warlord, Berserker Bully & Boomer Sgt. Grok definitely looks out of place.

I still need to have Arok printed and I’ll probably pick up the new Sgt along with the Matriarch.

For Hunters, I used Conquest models with Mantic heads to tie them in. Scale is a bit larger, but I like the models better. I have 12 of them painted up.

I’m still a bit intimidated by the basing, but I need to get something done, so I used sculptamold to get some ground variation, sort of a wind-swept steppe look, with a dark earth texture over top and glued some rock piles with sand. Going for the rocks grinding down and wind sweeping them against the rocks. Who knows if it’ll work. Once they dry I’ll prime black, zenithal white, airbrush some Desert Yellow and the some Boney Spikes from above. fingers crossed.

This week I painted 12 warriors with two-handed weapons and the Standard Bearer.

Ten regiments are almost complete - they are based with one final step remaining. I’m going to attempt using pigment power for the first time, dusting the feet, shrubs and rocks. For the basing I used sculptamold with AK Interactive Dark Earth on top. I then glued down some aquarium gravel and sand. Primed it black, then airbrushed desert yellow from about 45 degrees. Thinned down boney spikes to shoot from above through the airbrush and finished with a light drybrushing.

I should be able to finish the basing for the six leaders, 2 regiments of boomers, 1 regiment of shooters and Giant tomorrow when supplies arrive (I ran out of the terrain paste and broke my airbrush nozzle). The bases are ready to be primed and painted.

Up next:
I have 2.5 chariots painted, but I still need to paint the pups (primed) and the guys (not primed).
12 Berserker Braves are primed and a few have some paint on them.
