I plan to use this space to blog weekly about my entry into KoW via the 2026 Slow Grow.
I’ve never played KoW, but found a group that plays a variety of miniature games, including KOW, and decided to jump in and join the slow grow. (I don’t need much convincing to game!) I decided upon the Ogres for one main reason – lower model count. I just finished painting three Epic Warpath armies (Enforcers, GCPS & Nameless) and the larger models appeal to me right now.
I probably won’t be right on track w/ the slow grow. I’m attending Adepticon for the first time and need to finish some models for the FF & EW tournaments.
The diorama basing was a bit intimidating to me. I’ve only every really done sand or texture paste with some tufts for my DZ/FF/EW stuff. Thanks to Chris from the MUP podcast for some sound advice and encouragement. While planning my next steps, I’m cleaning mold lines and should finish all 60 ogres today. Then I’ll have the resin parts to clean up (chariots, siegebreaker & shooter bits).
I’ve settled on a professional mercenary unit theme for my ogres. I’m not a creative person (I’m an accountant) and it’s difficult for me to envision what things will look like - I need to see it, so I used AI to explore various color schemes. I need to prime and paint some test models to see what I can achieve, but here’s the look I’m aiming for.
I’ve also been thinking about the basing (thanks Chris!) and have printed some bases (w/ magnet holes) and scatter bits. I’m planning to base most of my ogres as troops and put two together for regiments. For basing options, I’ve printed some rocks, rock walls, weapon rack, wagon w/ chest, crates, barrels, fire, and pillars.
Gamer Background: I’ve always loved games in multiple formats (board, video, lawn, sports, etc.) and first found miniature gaming w/ WHFB 5th & WH40K 3rd along with Battletech. After a few years, it fizzled out and I started playing a lot more board games. I started a meetup, attended conventions, arranged gaming weekends at ABNBs and hosted weekly game nights.
I knew Fantasy Flight Games as a well-known board game publisher and I loved a lot of their games, so when they launched X-Wing, I jumped in with friends and enjoyed the game for a few years. Our daughter was born in 2019 and free-time disappeared, so I played a lot more video games with my friends.
A few years ago, I got the itch to play a miniatures game again and after watching reviews online, I decided to pick up Deadzone. It seemed perfect – a quick playing game with limited miniatures. I built the forces so my friends could play with me. I re-launched my semi-annual gaming weekend and took DZ and others enjoyed it. When Epic Warpath launched on KS a few months later I was able to convince 8 friends to back the project.
I’ve since built a sizable Enforcer army for Firefight and three EW armies and of course I have other boxes of opportunity in my hobby closet (FF Plague Force, Pathfinder box set, Armada, etc). I’ll get back to those (as we all say), but first I’m doing KoW.
I’ve got some ogres ready for priming
12 Warriors
12 Siege Breakers
12 Boomers
6 Shooters
I have 18 Ogres remaining, of which 3 are needed for the chariots. For flexibility, I think I’ll base the remaining as warriors/2H weapons and plan to use them in the back row to fill out regiments of whatever I need (behind siege breakers, shooters, warriors, etc.)
I’m trying something new and trying sub-assemblies. The Shields are massive and I think it might be easier to paint separate from the body.
The teal and yellow look amazing but theyre pulling the eyes in the wrong direction. The teal is so bright you want to look at the cloth more than the face. Maybe adding it to other spots would help to balance it?
I agree. The colors are amazing, but in that concept image the teal over-dominates and draws too much attention toward itself. That’s not to say it shouldn’t be there - just needs some tweaking for balance.
And I’m like you, Dan - 100% not visually creative. I can mimic artwork all day long, but I need a concept to follow.
