DarkBlack Magic! Misadventures in Necromancy

Has it really been a year!?
@TastyBagel kinda asked, so here’s an update:

My time for PBEM dried up last year. Sucked up by family and my efforts to advance my career; which included a significant move at the end of the year. Combined with some waiting to see in the lead up to 4th

I don’t get a lot of games, so struggle too much with the clock to be taking notes and pictures for battle reports during a tournament. Sorry.

I did get enough painted to use undead in two 1-day tournaments (more on the second one below). Getting all but the skeletons painted.
The plan was to leave the zombies to last, but I needed a regiment of zombies for a 1995 point list. I worked out an efficient paint scheme while painting that regiment, so churned out the rest.

Here they are:

Here they are in action:

This was at a Halloween and farewell to 3rd 1-day in Hamilton, Ontario, before I moved.
It was my last event/games for KoW 3rd and with that great group of guys.
It was a good day and I even managed to win the day!
The games were all close and involved a lucky break or two.

See above on tournament battle reports, but I’ll give some broad strokes:
You may notice a certain, um… immature terrain layout in the picture. It was a fun end of edition tournament, so all 3 games were on a variation of that map.
Which was to my advantage!

The double hills are good for surge armies because units can move on and surge off, projecting threat while opponents can’t see over the hills to charge themselves.
Which was made my line of expendable zombies backed by wights even more effective.
It was also good for my double werewolves.
The hairy part of the map was to one side, meaning that the other flank had room for my werewolves to make the most of their speed and nimble.

Here’s the list (as I remember it).

The gist is that zombies say that they’re expendable and I believe it. I’d recklessly push the zombies up, often with surge, to gain ground. If a flank is exposed doing so, great! It makes it extra tempting to engage the zombies.
Once the zombies are engaged, I can pick where my wights hit. Usually with zombie trolls and/or wraiths.
Ideally, some zombies rout and others survie the initial charge. Then I can gang up on the victors with my good units and clear them while their friends are bogged down.

The werewolves bully a flank and the wraiths block, so that my opponent has to deal with the zombies.
Wraiths were great, as were the boots.
Helm of the Drunken Ram didn’t help even once.
Individuals inspired, surged and occasionally held units up.

Zombies trolls were usually playing the objective as they’re tough enough to hold. Otherwise they’d fight with the wights.
A great all round unit, but less likely to be in lists going forward, because of the crowded specialist slot for undead in 4th. At least as far as my collection is concerned
I’m keen on Undead for 4th and mostly settled in my new life, so hopefully more will follow soon.
