Hi,
When your unit has the magical artifact ‘Dragonshard Shield’, I understand that you can only activate it after a halt or a Change facing.
My question is: Do I have to say to my opponent during my movement phase that I activate this, or can I just say it when he attack’s it? I guess you have to say it during your movement phase? Which kills the surprise

You need to say you are using it in your turn.
It’s why the artefact is generally only seen in undead armies or those others with surgable units

Yeah it can’t be a surprise like that, but if you play well and give one of his units no choice but to either charge your “boosted” unit or just do nothing, it can still be a good play. More situational of course, but even game-winning in certain situations.
