Finally painting some elves

Recently made some more progress on these elves.
Used this Blood Bowl team to jumpstart my painting:

A completed horde of Sea Guard. Have a few unit fillers of stacked spears and shields.

Some elves without bows (what’s the point?)

So time to do some test models for cavalry. These are GW Lord of the Rings minis.:

And work on some hero models:

First spell archmages must learn is enlarge self. I think the banner bearer is from Paul Hick Orcs and Elves Kickstarter.

I usually like the simplicity of Oathmark minis but that mounted wizard is pretty basic.
Any advice or feedback encouraged.

I like the clean, powder-blue colors.

Maybe add some patterns in purple to the trim of his skirt and sleeves? Just lines, or something more elaborate. The same purple on the plume of the horse might make it stand out from the powder blue of the rest of the force as well.

Alternatively, something mystical on the base? Given the horse is in motion, something running or flying (like a fairy or pseudodragon?)

More horses

The shallow detail on these MESBG minis didn’t really take my rough drybrushing very well so I’m trying a base silver with some Gloss Nuln Oil

That stuff flows well but boy oh boy this guy is shiny in person. So next I’m adding some lining using Black Templar (Contrast) and then some shading with the same diluted with medium.

Seems promising and I think in general contrast style paints give interesting results over metallics.

The hand coverings look like gloves and a quick look at a Swan Knight tutorial confirms that they are but my mind rebels against the idea that someone would not wear armor to protect their hands while fighting with a weapon with no hand guard. Well someone might but not someone wearing plate armor.

Painted of armor and the guy in the foreground is basically how I planned this unit

But now I’m wondering if there is too much white and silver all tinged blue. Is this better?

Made some progress on these guys.

Basecoats applied to some Silverbreeze aka Rivendell knights.

Same mostly done.

Actually switched up their coloring a bit on the theory that you should alternate areas with dark light and medium colors so things stand out better (based on the advice of Anne Foerster’s Painging Big youtube) . Basically the ideas is that if you take a B&W photo ideally all the different bits should stand out.

Primed some character models. The flying GW elf seems a bit over the top compared to the rest of the army. We’ll see how he goes.

Debating going with this freehand.

Could anything be more typical than discovering that Space Wolves Grey Contrast, when thinned, does an amazing job of shading Icy Violet?

Also much can be accomplished while one procrastinates on painting horses.
