Forces of the Abyss...redux (Slow Grow Challenge)

These are looking really good and you’ve only gone through one of the older Abyssal kits.

There is something almost digital about the tiles that makes these guys seem really other-dimensionally alien.
Great job.

Thanks! I’ve quite liked the Lower Abyssal kits. They might be in the old side but they hold up well. Certainly better than the old Dwarf sculpts (as much as I love them!).

Next up are the Tortured Souls. I’ve got the old metal sculpts, which look great but they’re a nightmare to base. They’re definitely a unit I hope will get updated in the near future.

Thankyou! The basing was the biggest roadblock to me starting this army. So I’m very pleased to have found something that looks good

This weekend I’ve travelled to Perth for a tournament (yay!), but that means I’ve not yet finished my Tortured Souls, which are very very close to done (boo!).

The Souls should be done in the next few days but in the meantime, I did paint this fine fellow;

Chroneas is done. I’m trying to stick with Mantic sculpts for this army, but I made an exception for the Chroneas. Like I said I like the model, but I’m also trying not to buy too many new models!

One of the few other canonically time-based monsters! I think he’s a cool choice and very evocative. Great work on the cloak! If I had a critique, it’s that the clock itself kind of blends into the base and his gray skin, but I’m guessing it’s the photo to some extent …

It does look better in person (the clock is more of a shade of bone), but I see what you mean. I thought about adding more detail to the clock but ultimately decided against it. I wanted the viewers eye to be drawn to the creepy old man, not the clock itself.

In the meantime, here’s some Tortured Souls;

…which completes the first stage of my army;

Next up is some Flamey boys - 2x Regiments of Flamebearers, an Efreet and one more Tortured Souls troop.

Good stuff mate - lovely army so far.

It is always wild to see the Mantic Tortured Souls painted up and hitting the table, they’re such easily passed over sculpts that usually are. So extra high fives, love the purple pops and that altar is :100:

Especially because (at least the metal ones - I bought FoA when they hit the shelves the first time),Tortured Souls could be called Torturing Souls too.

There’s not much space for gluing them to the base and upper and lower body are difficult too.

But I really like yours and the ‘ethereal’ aura they do have.

Thanks - it was definitely a pleasant surprise!

You’re not wrong, that’s for sure! I have the metal ones too, and attaching them to the base was definitely a pain. I initially tried pinning them through the foot, but the legs are just too thin for the paperclip wire I was using. So I just gave up and went with a pin straight into the lower torso, painted black. Not ideal, but I decided I needed models that weren’t going to break off the moment you looked at them, so the slight sacrifice in aesthetics was necessary.

Anywho, over the last 1.5 weeks I’ve been making a start on the Flamebearers and Efreet. Nothing finished yet, but plenty of WiP:

Also, I’ve just added black felt to the bases of the finished units, which means…

…they’re stackable! :grin: I went to the effort of magnetising taller elements on each base, so that they’re easy to remove when it comes to storage.

Having an army that’s easy to pack/store is vitally important to me. Most KoW events I play in require me to take my army on a train/plane, so having an army that will fit into my luggage without getting damaged is essential. :wink:

I’m on holiday this week, so I’ve been able to get a good chunk of painting in….

17x Flamebearers, an Efreet and two more Flamebearers that I’m thinking of using as leaders for my Tortured Souls.

My current Tortured Soul Regiment (see above) is led by a “Lampad” from the Malifaux range. It’s a great model, but it’s also non-mantic and I’m trying to avoid that where I can!

I’ve got another Tortured Souls Troop to paint this month, so when I get a chance I’ll do a side by side comparison and see which I prefer!

Nice, as expected!

In 3rd I used the vanguard flamebearer I had as an Efreet - and Diadem to boost him the FB9 with blast d3, hitting on 3+ when stationary just seems fun :fire:

Yeah, I’d love to give my Efreet the Diadem. But but in the lists I’ve made, I just haven’t found the points for it. If nothing else, I’m more interested in putting the Crystal Pendant on my Lower Abyssal Horde. :grin:
