Hobgoblin (the game)

Has anyone else heard of this game?

It’s a rank and flank game like our beloved Kings of War but allows you to build armies using keywords rather than army lists.

I heard about it on the Game Classy podcast yesterday. Apparently the points are similar enough to WHFB points yet people were able to play a 16,000 points game in around 5 hours.

There’s a PDF with some getting started and then a $20 PDF if you want the full thing.

Curious to know what people think of it and if anyone has played it. The small company behind it also made Gaslands which is a game in the Car Wars/Dark Future style.

I heard about it when it came out.
While it’s probably a great game, it didn’t hook my attention.
Sounds flexible, but also generic. Mostly I just don’t have time to get to more games, though

The new rules Midgard grabbed my interest much more. The heroic focus sounds interesting and the historical with your choice of how much fantasy got my attention too.
It evokes the epic battles I’ve read about and imagined, from Troy to the Battle of Five Armies.

Could be entirely down to how the games were presented, in terms of hype/marketing introduction.

What I like about it from what I’ve heard so far is that the keywords aspect is very powerful because it allows anyone to field an army with whatever they have miniatures for.

I like this because it does a couple of things differently to both Kings of War and to WHFB:

  • All armies are equal under this system. Mantic armies have had to sidestep some of the words used by Games Workshop for example “Kaos Dwarfs” and “Orx” — while both of these have since somewhat died off in favor of other names, there was at least some overlap vs. unique armies. Uncharted Empires book also attempted to fix some of this too.

  • Allows for the creation of new fantasy races. KoW now has races that aren’t in Warhammer, and that is a good thing. Under this system any new races can be created and played immediately. Players could create Abyssal/Chaos/Kaos/Dark/Twilight etc versions of existing races and play them.

I’d be curious to see how well it plays in reality.

I brought up Midgard because it’s also designed to be used whith whatever miniatures you have.
It even accommodates different scales.

Seems pretty cool.

I think the value would be someone really wanted to play a wargame based on their favorite IP. You could easily come up with everything you needed to play a campaign based on The Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan), or whatever else.

Another observation is that the design of army-builder and overall website and branding are very appealing. Much slicker than Mantic’s, which feels quite dated.

I don’t know if this will work, but here’s a quick Wheel of Time themed mini army list…

Crooked Dice have a similar adaptable rules system which is designed to let you play a tabletop game based on any TV show or movie you like. The rules use tropes and archetypes rather than naming specific units.

Its clever because it means you could use the rules to play a James Bond game, but you could also use them to play a Forbidden Planet game or whatever.

I have it but I was that annoyed with the way it was fulfilled I’ve not actually taken it out of the bubble wrap it arrived in. Some day I may open it and see what it’s like if I do I’ll let you know what I think
