a good question.
In the Gamers edition page 30, Individuals first paragraph, …single model, representing a roughly human -sized individual, on foot or horseback…

got it… cheap individuals with 5,6,7 attacks on horseback can reek havoc. thanks

They are also bigger height wise, so can see over a unit, if they need to shoot or declare charges , cast spells etc.

They can. But they also don’t score in scenarios!

Don’t forget the last paragraph in Movement, regarding an Individual joining a unit to reduce the risk of being charged.

Don’t lose individual if upgraded to regular Cavalry [Hero(Cav)] but some can get bigger mounts - OotGL Redeemer or KoM wizard for example, who become Hero(LCav) and explicitly lose Individual

good point @Sceleris , same for Forces of Nature : Unicorn it can be updated to fly, but loses the Individual. so check the stats. I believe they mostly change to Hero (Cav) and change base size but still are Individuals, unless it states differently.

so they can see over a height 2 horde, be within the charge range of the low defense spell caster, charge them and potentially kill them… interesting. do i have that right?

if the cavalry model makes them 3+ and the blocking unit is 2 or less, then they will have line of sight over the unit in front, then they can potentially shoot, cast spells or declare a charge on any enemy unit they can see. Charging can be made as long as they don’t move through the unit, but as individuals, they are nimble, so might be able to corkscrew around said unit.
P.S. Said enemy unit can also see them, so be careful of flying assassins.
