Very practical case that actually happens to me regularly. If you are withdrawing and “sliding” along an enemy unit, are you entering in contact with it or not? IE can the large yellow rectangle unit withdraw and not die?
Everybody on fanatics says “there is a gap”, there is not. This is a v3 artefact
“if your unit finishes a move touching an enemy base it did not charge or Reform! to, you must make it clear the units are not Engaged.” This is in unit interpenetration.
Nowhere in the rules is a gap mentioned.
Clearly the units can be touching, the question is whether this means touching is being in contact. Since withdraw says "come into contact), you can imagine that the blue rectangle at the bottom is still flush but more on the left, initially not touching the yellow. According to the rules the withdraw will result in the unit touching the enemy, and the question is “is touching entering into contact”
If however there was a second enemy unit, exactly flush with the first and the withdraw took you far enough to pass that “join” you would “have made contact” and therefore get routed.
If this was true you could withdraw completely through an enemy unit, not flushed, behind you. Which seems ridiculous ? I think we need an official answer
In your first case you are in contact and continue to be in contact. You are not ***brought into contact***. In your second instance you are brought into contact, particularly as enemy units are treated as (except in exceptional cases where it is noted) blocking terrain.
in the withdraw section:
If the 2D6” withdraw movement brings the unit into contact with an enemy unit, the withdrawing unit is immediately Routed, as per a failed Nerve test.
2.If the 2D6” withdraw movement brings the unit into contact with Blocking Terrain, the unit stops and moves no further, and is then Wavering.
By your logic you could skip right over blocking terrain if you rolled well enough. I would argue this is all pretty clear in the rules as written.
Think the issue is, what happens if you are already in contact with the enemy/blocking terrain - since both withdraw clauses refer to “brings the unit into contact”, which technically wouldn’t apply.
I think you can solve it with: could your unit stop there and not be “on top of” an enemy unit? If yes, the unit would not die during a withdraw.
Or to try to shoehorn it into your original wording; no, touching is not the same as being in contact, unless a Charge was involved. Would that make sense?
