MechaSturgeon’s Zombie Apocalypse #kowslowgrow2026

Hi Everyone,

Painting a Zombie army for the slow grow.

Cheated a little and painted a horde or 2 before the official start date. Did manage a Goreblight this week though!

Next I’m going to commit to some Zombie trolls.

Nice paintjob and full of character! One must love a good horde of zombies (and a Goreblight)!

Great basing, especially working around the disc bases! Rock solid painting in general too.

Good start!

So when you say a Zombie army, do yo mean mostly Zombies, Zombie Trolls and Goreblights? Because that would be awesome if so.

Yep, that’s the plan!

I’m going with the 5,4,3 rule.

5 hordes of Zombies

4 regiments of Zombie Trolls

3 Goreblights

Sprinkle in some characters to taste, maybe another horde or a regiment.

I plan on the army being 95-100% Mantic.

Great work - I love both the zombies and the basing.

Glorious! That’s exactly the kind of army I’m hoping to build one day - just an endless horde of trash.

You know when I said I cheated and painted a horde or 2 before the slow grow official start? I meant to say I painted 4 hordes…

Here are the other 2 for completion sake!

Eagle eyed viewers might notice a recurring cult symbol I’m trying to put in each unit. Looks kind of like an evil eye.

Ha - I just chose a very similar shield symbol for the dwarves I’m painting up.

Great dioramas.

Finished painting a Zombie Troll test model. Painting 4 regiments worth is going to take a while!

These look fab, I love the exposed muscles on the troll. Your basing method for the hordes looks really effective too, can you go into how you achieve it?

Sure thing!

First I glue down the large elements with PVA tacky glue, then I build up the base with thin cork sheets and wood putty/filler. For the zombies, I push them into the wood filler when still wet and remove them after an hour or 2 before the putty fully cures. After it’s cured, I then glue down rocks and sticks.

I then undercoat the base and paint all the elements. The models are then glued down and I cover the floor with AK interactive Dark Earth, but you can use any type of texture paint. When dry, I then dry brush with a lighter colour and cover the base with tufts and static grass.

Nice paint job. Maybe try a differenr loin cloth colour since its kind of blending in with the arms?

That’s the plan! Knew it as soon as I put paint to miniature. All the trolls will have random coloured loincloth.

I was looking at that and thinking that it’d be cool if his loincloth was actually skin that had been peeled down from his torso.

Flayed skin, now there’s an idea!

Thanks, it looks really effective. Seems like a great way to work with the “coin” bases on each mini. I’m definitely going to steal that method of pushing them into filler before it dries!

First lot of Zombie trolls painted. I think I’ll base them up after I paint another 3. Going with the old “minimum model count” rule, so that will be 2 regiments.
