So years ago I played Orcs and Goblins in Warhammer. But I didn’t really enjoy painting GW’s boys and that was a problem that caused me to quit a few times. When I started up again I found Mantic’s orcs which were both cheaper and better to paint and I combined those with mostly Reaper goblins. More recently I built a few armies for Lion/Dragon Rampart using Oathmakr’s Goblins which are even more cheaper and have a LotR style I like even better. At some point I painted some of GW’s LotR orcs but I’m not clear on when that was or where they are.
In theory those Rampant armies could have been expanded for KoW but they are on 1" washers which I don’t love for KoW (not enough orcs per base). Hence the need to paint more orcs..
In picture form:
All the way to the right are test minis for the KoW army.
The backbone of this army is going to be the Oathmark Goblins and Orcs with some of Paul Hicks new orc line added in. Each unit will have a larger Reaper mini orc to lead them.
I was holding back a bit thinking I might advocate a slow grow league but now I’m in hurry mode because I’d like to do a day of demo games and would like 2 niceish armies. So far I’ve built a lot of Oathmark kits (I swear the sprues multiply in the dark) and textured the bases of something like 750 points of orc infantry.
Also looking at leader dioramas.
I don’t think 40mm is enough to pull off this. The orc subordinate presenting severed heads to the general that has various bits already nailed to his shield.
These two orc combos seem to work OK. In front are some minis I’m thinking of turning into chariot crew.
Like so.
IMO the Paul Hicks warg riders are the nicest around.
