Salamanders - A 2026 Project

Hi everyone. I probably should have posted this much earlier in the year so you could follow along, but better late than never!

For the last couple of years I’ve been buying and painting up quite a few GW Lizardmen minis for use in RPGs. No real reason, I’ve just always thought they look really cool! But over time I’ve managed to build up quite a few of them.

This year I’ve set myself a resolution to turn those disparate lizardmen models into a Salamander army and play a few games with them. My target is 1500 points, but I’ll try to push myself up to 2000.

Here’s how the collection looked at the start of 2026. I had:

  • A saurus chief - I’ll use him as a clan lord or battle captain.

  • A skink mage - she can be my mage-priest.

  • 12 saurus warriors - they have a mix of hand weapons and spears, so they could be ranked up as either primes or ceremonial guard.

  • 12 skinks - again they have a mix of weapons, so they can go on troop/regiment bases and be gekkotah warriors or hunters

  • 4 saurus knights - they’ll fit on a regiment base to be some kaisenor lancers.

  • 6 melusai - not strictly lizardfolk but I’m thinking of using them as tyrants.

  • 3 skink pteradon riders - either scorchwings or gekkotah skylords

  • A slann - I’ll use him as some kind of monster, like perhaps a komodon or GFE.

There’s a lot of fun “toys” in there but not so many sensible battleline units, so I hopped on ebay and bought myself a lot of cheap saurus warriors! My plan for 1500 points is to add two regiments of Primes, a regiment of Ceremonial Guard, and two troops of Ember Sprites. If I have time/capacity, I’ll also add a troop of Fire Elementals and a Phoenix to the mix.

I’ve already made a bit of progress but I’ll drip-feed posts gradually rather than dump it all here in one go. Watch this space!

The first unit to be completed was a regiment of salamander primes! My plan is to include a horde of primes in the final army, but I’m modelling them as two regiments that I’ll stick on a shared movement base for games.

This was the first unit of salamanders I’ve multibased, and it feels good. I love multibasing, it’s one of my favourite things about KoW. Interestingly I had planned to put 15-16 warriors on a base but when it came to it I only got 11 on. I know I could have fit more on if I squished them up a bit but I like units to look dynamic, and that means having space to move. I don’t want my warriors to be all squashed together just to fit a certain number on the base.

That does mean that when I’m done I’ll have a few saurus minis left over! If I have enough I’m tempted to add some ancients to the army, but we’ll see where the year takes me.
