Spam list(s)

Id like to run a mono or near.mono.heavy infantry list at 2300pts at a tournament in a couple of months, using either loads of Abyssal Berserkers for FotA, or loads of Fallen for Varangur (with few mounted Lords to inspire them!). My main aim is not timing out and of course having fun. But which of the two is stronger?

Abyssal Berserkers are borderline broken en masse and I’m looking forward to the nerf (Nv 16/18 + Fury is too much). There are several people in my region playing 4 hordes of them, and my buddy sadly wants to make a 6+ horde list before they’re nerfed :man_facepalming:

Fallen are IMO more interesting to me because other people aren’t spamming them already (at least not in this edition, Fallen spam was 2E). I also like their pathfinder and the Ht 4 on their supporting heroes is nice for combo charging and etc.

That said, I think the Abyssal option is stronger, especially if you don’t just take Berserkers. You can also do an entire Mantic army of it, which is always a benefit. Here’s an example of a spammy list that’s stronger than just taking Oops! All Berserkers:

Forces of the Abyss 2024 [2300]

Gargoyles* (Heavy Infantry) Troop [85]
Gargoyles* (Heavy Infantry) Troop [85]
Gargoyles* (Heavy Infantry) Troop [85]
Abyssal Berserkers (Large Infantry) Horde [240]
Abyssal Berserkers (Large Infantry) Horde [240]
Abyssal Berserkers (Large Infantry) Horde [240]
Abyssal Berserkers (Large Infantry) Horde [240]
Berserker Apostate (Hero (Large Infantry)) 1 [165]
Berserker Apostate (Hero (Large Infantry)) 1 [165]
Berserker Apostate (Hero (Large Infantry)) 1 [165]
Abyssal Warlock (Hero (Large Infantry)) 1 [105]
– Bane Chant (2) [20]
[F] Abyssal Berserkers (Cult of Ba’el) (Large Infantry) Regiment [150]
[F] Abyssal Berserkers (Cult of Ba’el) (Large Infantry) Regiment [150]
[F] Abyssal Nagarri (Cult of Ba’el) (Chariot) Regiment [185]
– Sacred Horn [15]

Amazing chaff and some token carrying options alongside a serious amount of berserkin’

The units themselves are pretty decent, but relying more or less only on them as your units is going to prove troublesome in some senarioes/match-ups?

For objective missions your really either having to rely on a fairly pricy, but still fairly fragile regiment to hold them - or use 230+ hordes on the role.

Both units really rely on speed to get the the best out of them, so carrying loot tokens, which drop the speed to 5 and loses nimble has a big impact.

The fallen are more reliable with me3 and pathfinder v the berserkers me4 but more attacks - esp in terrain or against ensnare.

I’d probably go with whichever you fancy painting up and the new berserker models are nice and easier/cheaper to get hold on in bulk.

I’d worked up a list for FotA of 5 zerker hordes, 4 regiments of them, and 3 apostates. The models id be using are Age of Sigmar Chaos models, Slaves to Darkness and Blades of Khorne etc. So i think ‘rule of cool’ suggests the Varangur option instead? That’s 3 regiments of Fallen, 6 hordes of them, and three mounted Lords to keep up!

A thing im tempted by with the Abyss option is that apostates nearby give the berserkers vicious, helping with the swingy 4me?

Varangrr is certainly a better visual fit, particularly as Fallen are Ht 2 and it sounds like you’re using eeevil humans and not small monster men. These days the value option is Frosthegns over Frostlords, and with some juggling you can get 3 thegns and 1 lord in there:

The Fallen Horde
The Fallen Horde
The Fallen Horde
The Fallen Horde
The Fallen Horde
The Fallen Horde
The Fallen Regiment
The Fallen Regiment
Lord on Frostfang - Snow Fox, [5 pointer]
Thegn on Frostfang - Snow Fox
Thegn on Frostfang - Snow Fox
Thegn on Frostfang - Snow Fox
12(26)

And Staying Stone, Blade of Slashing, Mace of Crushing, Healing Brew, War Bow in roughly that order for the Frostlord

Looks like a fun list, with pathfinder and oceans of nimble giving a really strong movement phase, tempered by all the Sp 8 (I could have sworn Fallen were Sp 9!)
