TastyBagel’s Mostly Mantic Free Dwarfs

When 4E was announced, I was hit with a wave of motivation, and happily threw myself into a new army project, slowly chipping away at a specific pile of shame that had sat idle in several boxes for several years now: Mantic Dwarfs!

Running multiple Kings of War armies already, and liking to explore every unit and unit size that I can, a brand new army probably isn’t the smartest call, but oh well, here we are. Painting has been going on for 6ish months, and now that my early basing stages are finally figured out and some units are becoming more table ready, I figured I’d show these off here. (More detailed updates can be found at my blog, which covers all my Kings of War exploits, including hobbying in more detail, and battle reports.)

I wanted a verdant, grassy Free Dwarf theme for this army, something bright and eye-catching. I forced myself into learning some static grass techniques, and really tried to push myself to use layers and highlights here, to get a much brighter and cleaner army than my normal efforts, which have largely favored washes. Free Dwarfs might not be the smartest call for the new Edition, but time will tell. Long, rambling introduction done, the first units table-ready are (fittingly) Berserkers of many kinds!

The troops here are likely going to be put to work in demo lists for my Mantic Pathfinder demo games. At this unit size, they do have some fantastic Nerve, and we might fit them into a proper list or two to test out sometime. I did not do a good job with their stands, but with some more flowers and tufts, we should be able to camouflage that more in the future.

The regiments are GW. I wanted the army to be mostly Mantic, but I like second-hand models and couldn’t say no to their price. They were a bit hard to rank up with their big, sweeping weapons and poses, but we managed to get 10 on each base, and it looks full. Almost all my purchases for the army happened years ago, so these are actually likely going to hit the table pretty frequently for me in the short term, as I am a bit short on Core units, now that list building has changed so drastically.

Next up are Berserkers on Brocks. The overwhelming majority of my models have been second-hand purchases, and the Brock bundles were rather short on arms, capes, heads, and even a few brock armor plates. This regiment got most of the missing brock bits, substituting with various round shields, and then the berserkers got arm substitutions and weapon swaps, green stuff fur shoulders to hide those bad connections, pauldrons to hide the poor green stuff work, and then head swaps. The bits are predominately GW, full of detail, but I opted to keep everything a more striking, basic silver here.

The next regiment was missing a bits on the brock saddles, so I threw a bunch of pouches and hatchets atop a blob of green stuff. I’ve got bits for two other regiments, but unlikely to hobby those up anytime soon, as I haven’t figured out how to get mileage out of cavalry yet this edition. Almost every charge has been hindered, which is not great for cavalry.

Next up are three Warlords. Oops. List building has changed in the years since the purchases were made… it’s a bit unfortunate, as I am likely only going to ever field one at a time. Still, early on, I’m likely fielding one of these all the time, so I can move some Berserkers over to help shoulder the Core tax, which is currently neglected a bit in the collection.

The Wizkids mini was somewhat of a test model for me, painted up quickly and used for some grass experimentation. I tried “sealing” the grass with diluted PVA on him, but did not like this approach, as I couldn’t get good consistency, and the grass got mushy.

The Mantic model on foot was fun, and worked out nicely – far nicer than the troops did with just the one stand to deal with! I built up a little milliput around him, and with some texture paste, everything went fine. Between the two foot lords, he is more likely to see the field.

The last warlord is the most likely to see the table early on for me, and is the Berserker Lord on Large Brock model from Mantic. Individuals have taken some rough hits in 4E, and with all of these competing for a likely singular Warlord slot, the mounted version of the Berserker Lord seems much more attractive to me right now.

This is it for now. All of these are still on the WIP side. They need base edges painted (black, probably? I can’t decide. Sound off if you have an opinion) and I’m waiting for more of the army to get to this level of “doneness” before I add the rest of my limited flowers and such. More to come soon!

I always support the idea of getting a dwarf army!
They’re looking good so far.

I like the dwarf captains!

Both your models and as a champion in a list.
As with most things, the way lists work are a bit different with dwarfs.
In my experience; the trick with dwarfs is to adapt how you play to suit the army. Trying to fit the army into your playstyle doesn’t work.
Which is rather thematic IMO.

From my one 4th Edition game with dwarfs, I added a captain to my list.
I took more heroes for extra mastiff shots (which made me favour champions) and the support heroes looked good on paper. A banner with The Boomstick, a flame priest and two warsmiths.

While this was great for piling shooting damage in units, I quickly found that my 3rd Ed plan of finishing off units with ranged individuals wasn’t as feasible.
I wished I had something to finish battered enemies off with even one combat damage.

Cheers @DarkBlack, you beat me to it today! I had hoped to update this thread roughly weekly, but just have not had the free time I’d like recently. I appreciate the advice! All of our Champions look viable and I’m excited to try them out.

Indeed, we have a quick update on the Free Dwarfs, in that I have enough for a feasible demo army! I am a Mantic Pathfinder, and run my demo games at 600 pts, so hopefully these additions will help with some demo days soon.

We grabbed the two Berserker troops, and added a regiment each of Crossbowmen and Ironclad, as well as a kitbashed Captain from on of the ebay bundles I picked up over the years (over) preparing for this particular army project. This little collection will be bespoke, but I’ll touch them up with the additional flowers and such whenever I get around to touching-up the rest of the army. I still want to get further on everything before allocating all the other flowers and such.

And we’ve got a nice bonus Captain ready too. I have been a huge fan of Wizkids and related products over the years, and the blister duos are just some great value for really dynamic characters, great for RPGs, unique heroes, or just a quick painting break. Mantic’s old Dwarfs are very blocky, but a few of these mixed in as characters should still look fine on the table.

I’m still slowly chipping away at everything, and hopefully I’ll have enough done for a game in the coming weeks!

And we’ll sneak in another quick update this week. I’m building towards a Free Dwarf style list… but with things all combined for now, I couldn’t help but dabble a bit with the Imperial arsenal, and I gotta say, the dwarfs really need to mix things up in the naming department. First up is a kitbash for a Steel Juggernaut (not a Steel Behemoth).

These looked really neat in 3E, when they Inspired things and unlocks were much easier to come by. I had trouble against them, as having a Def6 guy around did wonders to protect a line, hold-off an opposing push, or add in a little extra damage here and there. Remarkably, the stat and price changes are minimal, but I don’t know how often he will hit the table, as these slots are pretty hard to come by now, and the Dwarfs have a lot of powerful options competing with the Juggernaut here.

And then we have some Ironguard (not Ironclad). These are the Def6 infantry, part of a cadre of exceptional infantry that saw their number of attacks increase, along with stuff like the KoM Foot Guard or Basilean Paladins. Without innate CS, the extra attacks aren’t that impactful, but are still welcome, and I’m going to enjoy playing around with some Def6 after years of having it used against me, even if they do go away at some point.

Nice kitbash on the iSentinel :mechanical_arm: I too want to like them but wow is the Dwarf support section overloaded! With cannons being the obvious choice and probably birds a solid second  And as cool and appropriately costed as Faber is now, he too has direct competition from the two warlords riding on things …

Regardless, keep on trucking, happy to see Free Dwarfs amassing, looking forward to hearing about their exploits!

Yeah, the mounted Dwarf Lords are clear winners in the warlord slot. I get maybe not wanting to antagonize a player base, but it’s bonkers to me that in addition to being the heavy-hitters, they also do slots swaps for in the army, and the Berserkers swaps impact three units! Design-wise, that seems like something that should be for the foot lords only. That is the way with KoM Foot Guard, so maybe Mantic is just throwing spaghetti at the wall design-wise, and will make things more uniform as the edition rolls on. :person_shrugging:

For hobby progress, I still need to figure out an edge color and add more flowers, but I’ve got a bunch of Champions and war machines ready now. I tried smashing things together to minimize the pictures here, but it’s a fair bit of glare. We’ll have more photo shoots when everything gets the edges and such.

There’s a neat assortment of war machines, but unfortunately the Iron Belcher Cannons are clear winner right now. They are the strongest at range, and Grapeshot arguably makes them better than Flame Belchers, which could be a really fun unit. Plenty of ways to balance this, but the Cannons deserve a nerf.

We’ve also got a ton of Champion options, and all seem viable? ASBs will want items; Captains are decent fighters; Flame Priest can clear chaff and Bane Chant; Stone Priests can work with Elementals or grab Arcane Library Spells; and if you have any shooting at all, the Warsmith is going to be godly with its buffs to Ironcraft.

I need some more units, especially Core units to help me out with a balanced list, but I should have stuff finished later this week, and hopefully the Dwarfs will get their first games in soon!

Alrighty, I made lots and lots of progress this week, so the updates keep on coming. Next up are some unit with light conversions, and should also tip me into some legal builds. We’ve got Shieldbreakers to help fill out the core! I am curious to see how often a Speed 4 unit gets to make use of Thunderous Charge though.

All of these units got horns from the Wargames Atlantic Dead Animal Bits kit. It’s a neat box, but I could only use the tiniest of the horns, so I won’t get to bling out as many units as I would have liked. The Shieldbreakers got ram horns, as those seemed fitting for the melee unit, with the new Rangers getting the more impractical antlers.

I liked the silver and green tones of the army overall, but the gold is really striking. I will need to mix that into a few units in the future I think.

I’ve got high hopes for the Rangers, though they are unfortunately limited to 2 per battalion. Scout, even in it’s more limited moves currently, should give them reliable Round 1 shots, which is nice, but that’s about as far as my theorycrafting has gotten. They are expensive but versatile, and likely have a very high skill ceiling by having both Feint and Pathfinder. I want my dwarfs to have a stronger shooting component than most of my other armies, so these are going to be staples for me for a while, as I try to figure them (and the rest of the army) out.

Last up are some Ironwatch Rifles, to help expand on explore the shooting component I want. These will help me fill core without necessarily needing a slot swap from a Lord, especially if I’m running regiments of them and the Shieldbreakers. Unfortunately, I was not paying attention, and one of the regiments was glued on backwards, which is going to be a little too much effort to easily fix right now, as the super glue spreads pretty far into the static grass, and these are not easily popping off.

But with these done, the first big hobbying push of the new army is complete, and I have enough units to start messing around with a few build ideas. More to come soon!

If you use them as a second line that charges in when other units are engaged; then one or twice a game.

With the way shooting nerve checks work in 4th, I think getting in to do even a little melee damage will be especially important for dwarfs.
Which adds value to the close combat capability of rangers and the Me 4+ of ironwatch.
