THE HALLOW :: Herd Battle Reports

Speaking of carnage! Here’s my last practice game before the GT. I’m genuinely surprised I’ve only played 20 games with my Herd army but I think that number is correct? Regardless, five more reports in bound in the next couple weeks, see y’all then!

Oh man, those were some replies today. Thank you both for your detailed thoughts!

I’m still entertaining some hobbying and casual Herd games later this year. I’m still intrigued by Scout and might try some Forest Shambler regiments sometime. Thanks for elaborating on these @Boss_Salvage! (I actually just read that Orc report last night, and wow! Those seemed fun there, and good luck on the rematch!)

I think @DarkBlack’s take that the 50mm monstrous heroes are “budget versions of budget dragons” is actually pretty apt. Coming from someone that runs KoM Generals on Winged Beasts, that is making good sense to me, and you both make a lot of great points in your replies. Earlier this month I noticed I don’t do Nimble charges or positioning all that well, so I think that’s the source of me undervaluing even these basic versions of monstrous heroes. Thanks for the insight!

And then wow, another very bloody game against the Abyssals! I feel your opponent’s pain in list building. I liked the concept of Abyssal Horsemen (Regen and CS on some cavalry sounds great!) but they just haven’t been working for me either. Good to see the Tortured Souls can do some work. Molochs are great, but they need a little screening and babysitting unfortunately. I had not seen this before, but using the Gargoyles as the punching bag for Zaz was a nice idea as well. Great stuff!

I’m way behind on reports, but here’s 3/5 of the Dead of Winter GT from late January. Just in time for my next tournament this weekend

Spoiler: Number of Greater Air Elementals fought on Day 1 = 4 :upside_down_face:

Well done!

That last game looked rough though. Surge definitely makes KoW less enjoyable for me.

Sorry for the delay, here’s Day 2 at long last!

Huzzah! I am glad you finished up these reports. Some wild swings there but great reads.

Thanks for the write up.
Glad that you got to these (I may have some battle reports that I got pictures for, but never got to ).

I like the format of the last two (I usually zoom into pictures anyway).

Well done on the one and sorry about the other.

That Salamander list looks hard to deal with, especially if you’re trying to figure out what to do during the game. Do you think you’ll be better off if you play it again?

It’s hard to say what I’d do differently, that Salamander list is particularly strong into no shooting, De 4+ Herd in a non-scenario.

The game would certainly have gone differently if I hadn’t trapped my nimble Lycan horde by a fraction of an inch, or his Komodons rolled more statistically (they were on fire early and late), or I didn’t roll that snake eyes. I did definitely underestimate Rhinosaur Cav as well … but I’m not sure that mattered either, as they were flanking or pounding heavily injured things into the dirt.

I knew this game was Eric’s going in, and that I’d need to take a chance to get any momentum of my own. That chance was the Stampede surviving Lancers in the front and Skylord in the back, which it might not have, but it would have given me time on the left to rotate around the central forest and etc, etc. Snake eyes took that away before it happened, sadly. I had that spot of luck with the overrun, but messed up the bane chant and couldn’t pop the Rhinos, dooming any kind of comeback. And before all of that, the Lycan Alpha wavering on 3-5 damage meant I couldn’t block the Rhinos with her, helping the Stampede position without risking a flank. So in conclusion, RNG is the real villain here.

Hot on the heels of that last post, here are two quick 2300 practice games against Undead on my way to the Pilgrimage GT!

Soul reaver rampages are rough.
Which is why it please me when they get destroyed.

I am late in commenting, but these were another pair of great reads! Thank you for sharing!

There is something satisfying in gaming against the Undead. Interesting lists from your opponent too! I don’t play against Undead much, but I can’t recall the last time I saw a list without Zombies. Does he just not want to hobby up some hordes, or does he not think they are worthwhile?

Even without Surge tricks, Wraiths seem quite strong, and able to hold up a lot of things with their Def6. How much do you prioritize targeting them, and have you picked up any tricks to counter Wraith-spam?

I finally built some slideshows for my Pilgrimage 2023 games and wrote quick reports. Sorry for the endless wait on these!

Thanks for the reports!
Good job on getting them out.

Interesting to see the way the dwarf and goblin games turned out.

Looking forward to your reports from King beyond the Wall.
I only managed to swing by, but curious how you went againt the players from around here.

You came over when I was playing Mike (NA dude), right?

KBTW was really great, very much looking forward to the next one. Sadly I had to choose between March of Death and Pilgrimage this year, and went with the closer one for family reasons. Will be choosing Hamilton next time around :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, that was me.

There is another Beyond the Wall event this year…

I’ll hopefully be there!

Happy weekend! Burn that work clock out with the first day of my Orc Town GT 2023 run:

C’mon, ya gotta post the recipe for that Orcto Cooler!

Some great looking tables and armies! :astonished: Thanks for sharing! I would have loved reading a play-by-play on some of these, but it’s hard reporting on stuff from that far back. If I get more than a day out from a game, even with notes, things start to get hazy.

Real shame about the clock being so determinative. Events gotta keep things moving, but that seems like some pretty tight timings, especially for these larger games.

Also, whatever was up, I hope you are in a better headspace nowadays, my friend.

Orcto Cooler
1 part Grey Goose vodka
1 part Midori melon liqueur
2 parts sour mix
Pour over ice in a rocks glass, garnish with a maraschino cherry

It might have been 1.5 to 1 on the vodka/melon ratio but I’ll just say YMMV. By which I mean, your first day of the Orc Town GT (and how much the bartenders take pity on you) may vary :clinking_glasses:

Considering I’m headed to Orc Town 2024 in a few weeks, it’s high time I finished up the reports for Orc Town 2023 :expressionless:
