Trident realms list advice

Good day all

We have a small local tournament coming up in end of November, and I am looking to finalise my list.

I’m a bit rusty, since I have had almost no games this year (new daughter and new responsibilities at work). Any advice would be appreciated.

It is a 1995pt tourney, and the local meta never really got into command dice, so those rules will be ignored at the tournament. Any advice?

I think you’d get a ton out of a Barkskin caster, even just to help the Depth Horrors make it into combat (people stopped taking them years ago once they lost fearless protecting them from wavering in the face of shooting). I would heartily recommend swapping the Siren to an Aquamage w/ Barkskin and maybe the Crown of the Wizard King? I just faced that at a tournament and it was really smart, could reach out and keep the Knucker shelled up.

You could give the Aquamage the Rising Tides aura too if you drop the King’s aura. The Naiad LL aura is pretty mediocre, compared to getting a little alpha jump from the extra wild charge.

EDIT: I’d also up the Naiad horde to Sharpness using the Thuul’s Mace. The math is very similar but Me 3+ is relevant against De 2+ things (or 3+ if they’ve got bane chant on them or 4+ off a hill with bane chant)

Agree with aquamage with Barkskin - with both thuul and depth horrors only de3 you can get a lot of free wounds.

I’d be more tempted to just give the ensnarers hammer of measured force than tool them up more?

You want your thuuls to hit hard - as they often don’t hang around much after that (although see Barkskin!). Drunken Ram or Blood of the Old King makes the most out of their 20 attacks?

I think the hammer is relevant if you want to do something with those 25 extra points, both strength and sharpness are better (I am not a HOMF fan^). But those points could totally go to juicing up the Thuul! Which becomes 40 points if the King’s aura is tossed in, easily covering both Blood and Helm.

^ There are worse things than delivering 6 damage into every target you touch, but there are also better. Or maybe I should ask the question, do the Ensnarers need an item? They don’t really need to act as hammers given what else is in the list …

I like MF on grindy type stuff i can stick in the centre of my battleline and just hurt whatever hits it.

Certainly the real potential damage dealers in the list are the DH, thuul (with BC/artifact help) and the king.

With this list I’d get kraken with the TC1 deep horror upgrade over the giant - although you have to find points for that.

You need to be really strapped to not find 20 points for it, so fair … tho we are talking about 1995, which wants to run leaner than 2300 by its nature. Anyhoo, every time I see a Naiad horde in NA it has the hammer stapled to it, but maybe the comparison is unfair since they’re markedly better than the TR version (30 attaks often with vicious, but also just far more survivable at the cost of a regen pip). I’m less sure what they do in TR, apart from have regen 4+ and a bunch of Nv.

Also, I’ll acknowledge that a cool thing about the King’s Naiad aura is that it gives him LL2. He’s not particularly a grind character or likely to be shot with all the other, softer targets, and I still question if 15 points for LL2 is worth it compared to juicing up the Thuuls or giving Rising Tides to the Aquamage, but it’s not nothing on top of gently buffing the various Naiad in the list.

Some great advice all round

Thanks guys!

I added the siren because you sometimes have that unit you really want to make work… but yeah I can see the argument to rather take the aquamage.

I also completely forgot the Trdient king has regen - was thinking the LL would give him some grind if he finds himself in a bad match up - but dropping that for the blood of the old king makes more sense.

Honestly I love my naiads with brew of strength - in a pinch I swap it out for measured force, but the brew just really gives me that nice potential to drop a bane chant on them when needed and then you have normally 12 hits CS 2 can put a hurt on anything. I usually put them somewhere central to my line where there is some cover close to an objective - these guys have won games for me by just being a threat to anything my opponent can throw at them.
I can see the argument for the brew of sharpness, If I have points I’ll have to look at that.

the one thing I feel my list lacks is a good tool to disrupt flyers - I know my one KoM opponent loves to bring 2 hordes of those flying cav and there are some other players that really like their dragons.

I’m wondering if I should swap out my wyrm rider cent for a centurion with the trident + boots of the seven leagues. It is such a nice tool to disrupt cav, but brings down my scoring and it is (slightly) more expensive.

And with all these deep ones, I would love to get the Kraken+upgrade, but yeah… point constraints are real, and I also don’t have a model I’m very happy with for my kraken yet.

Here is the updated list I’m looking at, although now I’m 10pts over

As you need to find a few points I’d either go MF for Strength or ditch the mage’s crown (he’s sp6 so able to keep up with the thuul/DH, so shorter ranged Barkskin should be a massive issue?).

If former option, orb of towering presence on the wyrmrider champion is a nice buff - or give the tidal swarms shooting attacks?

Latter then mace/blade on wyrmrider?

How often do you think the Depth Horrors will be charging, as opposed to counter-charging (or combo-charging as part of a second wave)? Sp 6 is not fast, in your list or in the meta. I feel like you could drop their strider boots pretty confidently, and either go staying stone to help with shooting wavering (and survival in general) or upgrade the Naiads to sharpness.

Hi

Good point, the thinking with jesse’s boots on them was that I can then slap them in terrain, which should help with cover and make opponents hesitant to charge them with -2 to hit - but I can still advance them up and threaten with them. Also we normally have quite a few large(ish) area terrain around the center of the board, so feel it can be worthwhile, but will tinker with it a bit
