What's your current battalion structure?

What unit categories are you taking/unlocking in your current army lists?

Following the possibly misjudged Your 4th Commander? topic, thought it would be interesting to see the difference between lists.

Example (fictional):

Trident Realms
2300pts

1st Battalion:
Warlord 1
Champion 2
Core 4
Aux 0
Specialist 2
Support 3

2nd Battalion:
Warlord 1
Champion 0
Core 2
Aux 0
Specialist 0
Support 0

Notes: 1st Bat Centurion - Heartpiercers to Core

So with the single real game of 4th I’ve played, my 2300 AD looked as follows.

1st Battalion:
Warlord 0
Champion 2
Core 4
Aux 2
Specialist 3
Support 3

As a comparison, my opponents Basilea was this

1st Battalion:
Warlord 1
Champion 2
Core 4
Aux 0
Specialist 3
Support 3

Appreciate the info - already not quite what I’d expected! I’m building theoretical lists in a bit of a bubble so very interesting.

My (2000pt) goblins - for what it is worth I haven’t played this list yet…

Warlords: 1

Champions: 2

Core: 4

Specialist: 4

Support: 4

Well my 2k Dwarfs at CoK Canberra was basically…

1x Warlord
1x Champion
4x Core
(1x Auxiliary)
2x Specialists
3x Support

The Warlord (Dwarf Lord on Large Beast) is what allowed me to unlock Ironguard to Core, otherwise I would have likely needed a more even spread of 3x Core/3x Specialists.

The other outlier is just two Heroes. The only reason I can do that is because one of my Support is a Steel Behemoth, which was my third source of Inspiring.

For my prospective 2300pt Forces of the Abyss List, it’s currently looking like…

1x Warlord
2x Champions
5x Core
(1x Auxiliary)
3x Specialists
2x Support

Probably a more typical spread of units for a game of this size. Maybe a little heavy on the Core, but that probably comes down to me valuing basic rank and file more than some other players. :stuck_out_tongue:

As an aside, I’m not seeing alot of need for a second Battalion in most games under 2500. I’m not feeling constrained by the limit on non-Core units, and it probably helps that I’m not using a Horde army like Ratkin or Goblins. Beyond that, I feel like the main reason people decide to take a second Battalion is for the additional Warlord, or more units that are otherwise restricted to 1-2 per Battalion.

AD list I’m painting up

1st Battalion:
Warlord 1
Champion 1
Core 4
Aux 2 (both Core)
Specialist 1
Support 1

2nd Battalion:
Warlord 1
Champion 0
Core 2
Aux 0
Specialist 0
Support 1

One Warlord moves halfbreeds to Core, the other is Skinflayer who allows ratkin and a death engine.

KoM list which will get a run out (hopefully) soon.

1st Battalion:
Warlord 1
Champion 2
Core 5
Aux 1 (Core)
Specialist 1
Support 2

2nd Battalion:
Warlord 1
Champion 0
Core 2
Aux 0
Specialist 0
Support 0

Both Warlords are flyers.

2.3k Undead list I’m working on:

2 Champions
5 Core
2 Specialist
3 Support

sure its only 12 drops, but it is 26 US with an average defense of 5.09!

actually, looking at the list for this post got me thinking, and I can move things around so I end up with 1 more Core. Are 2 Zombie Hordes worth dropping a Revenant Horde? gotta try both versions.

Playing Elite armies mostly like elves or dwarfs (or even playing cheaper ones with expensive units),

I don’t field so many units. And because it was before the FAQ which reduces the usefulness of individuals further (7/20 scenarios are loot scenarios), I used them quite often.

Warlord

Champion (Spellcaster)

Champion (Spellcaster)

5 Core (3* Hordes)

1 Aux

1 Elite

2 Support

its pretty funny to see Individuals get worse, with no relief for the unit type in sight.

they could at least get a discount.

Yeah there’s a certain irony to it. I think Mantic did make an attempt to improve individuals with the Command rules, but the rest of the game shifted in a way that made them worse anyway. Between limited access to inspiring, fewer Champion slots and spellcasters being just as good at commands, there just isn’t much reason to take a melee individual.

Hell, they can’t even make good character/flyer hunters, since you really need them to support your rank and file.

If you want to fly your dragon etc around the back, its quite likely their commands will be out of range.

Maybe the Commands should have been optional?

Mantic can’t be doing their sales of characters any favours. You would think they would prefer to have minis on the table rather than points spent on extra rules. At least in 3rd they got to sell the dice.

The sales for assassin like characters are reaching new heights I would assume.

Well, characters in general are having a hard time. Especially if they don’t have Inspiring. In 3.5 I took characters for experiments and fun quite often, because it was easier to get enough sources of Inspiring or to get a slot for them in general.

But in this edition I can’t afford it.

I don’t know if it is an aesthetic or’ feels better ‘ kind of decision - or if it has financial reasons, but there is a shift towards regiments and away not only from characters, but from individual models in general.

I expected the profit margin to be greater for individual models, so maybe I am wrong.

So far the game is still so fresh, there are no trodden path already. In 6 months or so lists will probably look different.

Perhaps if everyone got one set of free commands on a warlord/champion nominated by them as "The Commander " it would work better. You get some flavour, its not as expensive in points, not every champion or dragon rider is paying the Commands tax.

‘Support’ type individuals are decent, esp inspiring casters (Basilean priest, AD ironcaster, FoN druid etc).

Combat individuals have lost a lot, fast ones now struggle to do the role they used to.

Unless you also have a bunch of flying units, your flying warlord type might not get much out of commands for most of the game - although to be fair some armies one are sh*te so not using them happens even if you are nearby!
