4th edition leaks and rumors

They should have given the banner bearers 3 command dice

Or make that a one per army upgrade

That would be fun.

A big piece of the banner bearers is going to be that they have very inspiring, have US, can hold tokens, and can issue commands. For the odd one, such as the Twilight Kin Navigator, you are also making a Dark Kind unit Vicious and have the option of taking a skiff to make shooting attacks as well. Pretty good action economy for the points.

Are FoN, Elves, Dwarves & Men being held back for some reason or have I missed them? Are their lists in the new book?

Yes they are in the book. If no podcasts asked for those lists, they were not sent out.

Totally agree. I think the double-whammy of the price hike, and losing the Lute of Bane Chant, has soured first impressions of the humble Standard Bearer.

People will start valuing them alot more once they try actually making some lists with decent Inspiring & Command Order coverage.

Well you can, for 20pts with the Banner of Command.

Honestly I think there’s still alot of good magic items available to replace the Lute. The Banner and Torque of Command are both obvious choices, as all the items that grant a spell of some kind - the Diadem, Boomstick, Trickster’s Wand, Saint Shroud, Zephyr Crown and Tome of Darkness. Altogether, they should make for a pretty efficient support unit to sit behind the ranks.

Well I think we managed to do a couple demo games today. In any case extra pivots were pivoted and commands were commanded. I don’t think any units were wavered by shooting so we didn’t accidently rout them. Didn’t hear any complaints about the new rules although the undead player was disappointed that he couldn’t surge his wraiths after removing shambling…

First game we had a Ogre Banner Bearer take down a Biggit that had charged him so Ogres are still Ogres.

Heard someone downstairs in the retail area talking about being tempted to buy some Old World Empire troops so I naturally press-ganged him into the second demo game. I can say that Kings still has it’s quality of playing a few turns and already knowing most of what to do. Also when he was looking for the companion he exclaimed: “Oh these are the guys that make Halo” So there’s that.

When the book comes out I’ll definitely have to read the reform rules very carefully because if both sides end up adding reinforcements into a melee it can get slightly more complicated that the old rules.

The new system for assembling an army will change a lot of things.

Even if you could take a champion with Inspiring, you might prefer to choose a support unit instead, since you have already purchased a core and special selection for it.

And with large flyers with Inspiring, you used to be able to let them fight away from the army. There were enough other models with Inspiring in the army.

In addition, Inspiring now has greater significance, as there are more rules that refer to it.

Time will tell how important Inspiring really is.

In Edition 3, I won several games with elves and a maximum of 3 times Inspiring.

It would definitely be a shame if dragons, Bael and other larger flyers fell victim to the new army structure.

Found some stl files for L shaped tokens for marking buffs etc. Comes with Bane Chant, Frozen, Hindered, Wavering, and March.

Using my super advanced 3D Builder skills I plan to add some “Command #1”, “Command #2” markers. Anything else we are gong to need for 4th in particular? Maybe “Halt” for those sweet shooting bonuses?

I like it! Always fun to use specific markers

But then I was thinking, if you have too many markers it’s going to be a little fiddly finding the one you need. For instance you might want 4 of each command for each player and commands 3&4 might just sit around a lot for 18 months, depending.

So what if you made dice that could be rotated to the command you need. And then what if you put them all in a bag… Wait, wrong Alessio game!

Anyhow so far we used mainly wavered and maybe banechant markers and relying on memory for hindered or disordered units. I think there are easily going to be enough commands and failed commands on various units to need markers. But we could be doing it wrong so any advice from players with more games under their belt would be useful.

Issue really is the markers etc are there to keep things clear for both you and oppo - make things too complicated and the whole thing becomes a mess.

I had a whole load of bases (the flat 25mm style ones which came with frostgrave models etc) to mark up the really important/common stuff - so some with BC (obvious), some with W(aver), VoS (Veil of Shadows). If running halflings or TK then had some which mirrored the effects of those - LL, S&S (spellward & stealthy), R(ally) etc

If you stick down a Command A marker it still needs both of you to remember what Command A actually does - and similarly with graphic markers. What does the broken skull mean, the big axe thing …

Mantic does have them for various rules and spells but not sure they really help game play at times.

I do find it odd that your regular Elves, Men & Dwarves - core fantasy archetypes - are not covered at all in the hype for the new edition.

I don’t.
Those have dedicated fans that will play them no matter what and we all know they’ll be there and roughly what we expect. As they are in most fantasy games.

Mantic’s own IP and new releases are what need marketing.

That’s not the reason given though.

There are new units in the online shop. I do hope they are just temporarily offered as bundles.

Especially the ones for halflings. Players already owning a howitzer for sure don’t need another one, just because they want the wheelchair dragon.

And the troll bundle seems weird too.

Just 3 of them, but one of the rare hero slots too?

Orcs, Goblins and Undead are so unique?

I wouldn’t say so. And they were previewed.

It’s the reason for why I don’t find it odd.

I doubt that Mantic made sure any lists got covered somehow in any case.
The lists that got covered seem mostly random/whatever the reviewer plays, but the ones I think Mantic might want to push were there anyway.

Elves and Dwarves and KoM would give us a lot of information, given that they’re carrying the weight of being 6 factions (for now)!

The content creators asked for armies, which was based on what they themselves played or found interesting to cover

If I would have gotten the chance I would have asked for Elves as I am familiar with them

Mantic could have coordinated it better by avoiding a double coverage as no one else knew what was asked for, but for that it is just that none of the hosts playes Dwarfs, Elves or KoM, or didn’t want to talk about them

Has anyone seen what the Forces of Nature regular infantry looks like?
