Clash of Kings info/updates

I think there’s a lot of needless worrying in this thread. Someone at mantic had an idea for new orc stuff, and they decided they wanted to make a theme list instead of overhauling the old orc stuff because you have way more flexibility to make it happen that way. The aesthetic might not be for you, but it’s just another set of models and another army list. I’m sure we’ll see lots of the new plastics in regular orc lists, and all kinds of stuff run as riftforged, just like every other army.

I’d be surprised if we saw new regular orc minis any time soon

Why wouldn’t you? I don’t see anything in the article suggesting either replacing orcs or starting to require Mantic only for KoW.

Why bother with a theme list if they were? More than a few armies got reworked with 3rd edition. If Mantic wanted to redo the orc line they just would, like goblins recently.
This looks like Mantic getting people to buy their miniatures by making cool miniatures, rather than requiring they be used for KoW.
New stuff sells.

I see no reason to suspect what you’re suggesting.

100% this.

People seem to be shitting themselves over a game that is figure agnostic. I’m genuinely baffled at the panic.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to suggest we would, just that I’m sure people will use the new minis and use them as regular old orcs.

I like the aesthetics of them, its just that “in a time of upheaval, a god forges a new species from lightning. they live, and die, and live again.” is pretty much word for word the Stormcast backstory. Of course that is funny in its own way, can’t copyright story elements like that so its fine IP wise but … its just the same story.

I might be nitpicky but what I like least is the lightning part of it all. You kinda think sky, storms, clouds etc with lightning, not the pits of hell/the abyss.

Regardless, green is good.

Who speaks of panic?! I think it’s fair to say that a few of us are unsure concerning the style of the new minis. I haven’t had the impression someone panicked.
Sure, they are just a theme list, not replacing regular Orcs, which is good.
Giving feedback, positive or negative, on a ‘new’ style of miniatures is also good. A few Mantic people are reading these threads once in a while. Maybe it helps them hitting the taste of a lot of people.
I’m no fan of the artworks so far, but nowhere near panicked.
Let’s wait for the miniatures.

I really like the latest Artwork because if its Frank Frazetta style

I don’t see a big problem here, those who like classic fantasy Orcs can use the old models, those who want more lightning can use the new ones

And of course Mantic is slowly forming their own model IP we already see with Halflings, Salamanders, Tridents Realm, Northern Alliance and Ratkin

I can see using them as Poster boys for KoW or better said Mantic looking for something iconic to use as main evil face to get a better reputation as “bad model quality” is still the main argument people bring up for not playing KoW

I really like them. I don’t play orcs but will definitely be finding room in my nightstalkers for that new ammberox

I think they’re funny for same-story reasons mentioned, even more when you get the “no one on the design team reads AoS lore” as an answer, haha. Its just so silly.

What concerns me is another pre-order, another new army right after the complete mess that was the Halfling Preorder. Mantic is working at this breakneck pace and I wish they’d slow down just a little and actually complete ranges and do things properly rather than this barrage of things. I get it, this probably makes more money, and its pretty exciting, but where the hell are the Northern Alliance Huscarls?! When will those be available for purchase on their own?!

Main issue with some of the models from tge Vanguard sets is that they weren’t designed as a free standing kit - so the pvc sprue includes parts for a number of different models. This naturally makes production and packaging far more of an issue than with self contained stuff.

@MarkG - Re new orc kits. Although the new orc kit wasn’t designed to be directly compatible, the heads/arms has standardised fittings between the ranges, while conversion kits are coming to all the RFO kit to make existing orc units.

And in the time since their release, they’ve started selling how many new plastic kits? I get that it’d be more work, but the whole “you only get 10 of these per mega army and just as many snow trolls” as a forever thing is kinda ridiculous.

It was a fairly shortlived approach, which they have thankfully stopped, but is something they do need to rectify

Some decent minis there - the lightning monster sticks out for being a bit odd

Lot of support for a theme list - I reckon anything with miniatures is making it into the next big rulebook

well, even AoS Designers don’t read the AoS lore…

what I got from the Matt Gilbert interview is that a lot of this mess is caused by Brexit, from simple issues of models being in a container sitting in a harbour in England for months, they know that they are there but have no information when they have access to them

it was also said that it was originally planned to have 2 books, one CoK and one campaign book with the army lists, did not work out for similar reasons
this is also a reason why they changed to resin and recently upgraded the equipment to be able to produce more in house

might just be that the missing units are in a different container, still sitting there waiting to be proceeded while the one with the plastic orcs got thru

I agree that there should be more time between the army releases but without any control on when models arrive in the warehouse and storage space being expensive I fear as long as Brexit is a mess, the releases from Mantic will be as well (and even GW releases are a mess at the moment without any logic behind for the very same reason)

I really like those models, a good theme and something different than what we get from all the other companies out there
interesting to see that we get unit command options back

Yet I am thinking about that the models might look better if all had the same pale red skin as the cyclops hero

Plastic orcs look pretty decent.

May just be the pics but the scale on the two manticore mounted guys just looks odd?

Thr bottom one is clearly a cavalry based model, albeit a chunky boy - the other just looks as if it is a bigger model, but don’t think it is?
