I teally enjoy the Fireside Chats.
For that last one; historical wargames are usually Rank & Flank. Formations were a significant aspect of wafare up to the 20th century.
With the exception of skirmish games like Baron’s War or Saga.
The newest Rank & Flank wargame I know of is Midgard (released in November).
It’s in the style typical of historical wargames. In that it’s a book only that provides versatile game rules designed to let players use their own models and inspiration.
Written for “heroic warfare” that covers a range of historical periods and has optional fantasy elements.
The US Master’s coverage has also been fun to listen to and inspires me to get to more events.
I don’t have anything to add though.
I appreciate the shoutout to dataanddice.com! I am in Wisconsin and will do my best to make it out to masters next year–it’s a shorter drive for me. Three kids plus work makes it really hard to travel much for games at this stage of life.

I got into KoW in 2016 (maybe late 2015). I’m fairly certain that Counter Charge was a major reason for me to get the whole “listening to podcasts” thing figured out back then.
I probably heard about Counter Charge on Fanatics or the old Mantic run KoW Forum.
I honestly don’t remember which episode I heard first.
800 episodes is too many to choose one fravourite from.
Army reviews are always appreciated, list builder studios were great when I was more competitive, all your efforts to bring Pannithor lore into the spotlight are fantastic on principle and interviews with Ronnie are always fun.
Chats with any passionate wargamer are interesting.
I really enjoy the newer formats of fireside chats and Lore Master’s Library. Though I am bias toward the latter on account of having been involved myself.
When I got into KOW, about 2-3 years ago, it was logical to seek out Mantic/KOW podcasts to listen to on my commute.
The three that returned for me were Mantic Universe Podcast, Counter Charge and Direct Misfire, and the rest is history…
I think sometimes the KOW community mis underestimates how much KOW-related “jargon” is used in KOW-related podcasts, posts and articles. I remember, in the early days, being frustrated that even mention of things like “chaff” or various aspects of “the meta” were not immediately comprehensible to me. I might have a sense of what was being talked about, but it was only after a lot of games, reading and more listening that things really became clear.
So, my favourite Counter Charge episode is the Ogre army review, and it was also the first episode I listened to, because I remember listening to it to help me plan next purchases (I had got into KOW with the Sands of Ahmun set). But, bearing in mind my comments about regarding new players and the mystery of certain terms and shorthand phrases used in the community, I actually had to go back and listen to it later to really understand it and get the most out of it.
While I also like the Mantic Universe Podcast, which has a more UK / EU feel to it, I prefer the relaxed tone of Counter Charge, and I think a strength is that you guys go deep into KOW and aren’t afraid to do pretty long podcasts where its merited.
I found you by searching for Mantic or Kings of War on my Podcast Addict app.
Between 2015 and 2019 I used to save any episodes for thursday evenings when I used to do my weekly overtime night.
I would listen while cleaning the parking garage of where I worked with a Ride-on Floor Scrubber, and I always used to turn the ignition at the same time as the “let’s roll” part of the intro.
The first episode I listened to was the last episode of Mantic Radio where you said you were changing your name to Countercharge.
Too many to choose from, but I loved one of the very first episodes where you had a recording from the last WHFB US Masters I believe, of each Masters rep going up to the podium and stating which system their region voted to switch to, and the majority came out Kings of War, it really got my amped up and ready to give this system a proper go.
I found you guys via the community when I started getting interested in Kings of War and Warpath.
My first episode was when you guys talked about the Brotherhood.
Dwarves are my favorites in, most, fantasy and science fiction but knights are also a big love of mine.
Back when I collected Warhammer Fantasy I remember having a love/hate relationship with Bretonnia.
I loved a lot of the designs but I just hated how their ‘grimdark’ aspect was them just being arrogant and abusing their peasants.
So when Mantic took a crack at them I was pleasantly surprised at how well they were done.
The segment that always stuck with me was when you guys talked with one of the lore guys on how their 1000 year long Watch over the Abyss caused many to develop various forms of PTSD.
I don’t know why but that just struck something with me, I loved how their ‘dark’ aspect was what their Vows to protect the world from the Abyss costed them mentally.
How they have become resentful of other ‘good’ factions for not aiding them more but would still give their all defending them.
If Counter Charge is no longer an action in 4th are you guys going to have to rename the podcast?!?!
BTW, thanks for putting out this podcast over the years, it kept me attached to the game even when I didn’t have anyone to play with for a number of years. Keep up the good work.
To be fair we started way back in 1st edition when Counter Charge wasn’t a thing, so it’s on brand if we carry on with the name even after the rule isn’t in the game!

Real life has kept me away from games for a bit and this talk has me amped to get to an event again and added Clash of Kings to my bucket list.
