I am still not happy going back to Warhammer style movement trays I’d need to make the unit more flexible for different games, so I am working on a more 8diorama style tray, but models can still be put in/ taken out
More units with diorama style bases, Tunnelling Free Dwarf Miners (Shieldbreakers)
“Is the coast clear?”
I still have 24 Lord of the Rings Dwarf Rangers to paint, which I will split into a regiment of double handed weapons and a troop of crossbow, and I’m waiting for a Prospecter with his steam digger, but so far we have around 2600 points including a Greater Earth Elemental.
Spectacular work as always, but that peeking dwarf just plain takes the cake.
Heck, with him hiding like he is, he may actually have taken the cake.
Many thanks @wilberforce . , Initially, the cavern base was built for the last few mix of old and new Goblins. It was a fun build, as i liked the concept, but the old Warhammer Night Goblins that comprised most of the MMC were put back with all the other night goblins, saving my KoW goblins for KoW and fielding the rest as Warhammer 6th ed.
Thus, the base was sitting on a shelf looking dejected, until my miners came along. They are perfect for Free Dwarf unit with 2 handed weapon and scout, or as Miners in WFB 6th. All i need is the Prospector with his Steam Drill/Dwarf Battle Driller. (on order).
The Prospector denies everything. Furthermore, the suspicious white powder on his facial hair, he claims that it is Chalk from the substrata, not icing sugar, at all. “Nothing to see here! Move along folks!”
Where are those ranger models from? I’m on the lookout for some rangers for my Vanguard warband and these look like they might go with Mantic dwarves well enough.
@screamingaddabs They do look sweet don’t they. They are from the LOTR game by Games Workshop, and for GW they are a decent price for 24 models. Technically, they are just clip off the sprue and slot into the base, but it is possible to change arms/weapons ect on some of them. I added standards, musician ect, and made 16 axe wielders and 8 bowmen, for a MMC of KoW regiment of Rangers with Axe and a troop with bows. If you like Elves too, (Particularly the ones for Northern Alliance, the LOTR elf rangers are also worth a look.
The GW ones are nice, although will be small alongside the chunky mantic ones.
I’d also used them as rangers - here’s an old pic along side a couple of characters kitbashed from oathmark bits and an old gw dwarf wizard (you can tell its ancient as dwarf wizards got ditched waaayyyy back!)
There are some very sweet options for Dwarfs out there, some nice 'old ’ Metal ones like the Dwarf Wars miniatures, some cheap and multi-possibility ones like the three Oathmark ones, and a nice array of resin options too.
I don’t like the Mantic Dwarf heads in those silly flat helmets, but the Berserkers etc that don’t wear helmets are also nice models.
Because I am a Vanguard player rather than KoW I really only need about three ranger models.
I’ve seen these on ebay and was trying to decide if they would fit in ok. I’d happily buy mantic ones but there is only (as far as I am aware) the one in the vanguard starter set (I have her) and the ranger captain Herneas.
yeah, i had the same problem when i was getting a unit of Dwarfs and Elves for my Northern Alliance. Buying a whole load of Vanguard sets (6+) to obtain 2 more Huscarls, 2 more Half elf beerserkers , 2 more Ice Naiads and two more Ice Kin, as well as more Snow Trolls (lord knows i don’t need those after buying both the Army sets (10 trolls is enough) or the Three sweet looking Dwarfs in the Dward |Clansmen reinforcements. The same is true for the heros to obtain Frostfang riders.
Now that the pressure is off and the local gaming event has come and gone, I can take some time to touch up my Free Dwarfs , starting with my Brock riders.
I had to keep redoing the skin tone lighter and lighter until they looked like the Irish man on his first day in Australia, in order to get it so that the hair stood our over the skin rather than merge with it, but given that Dwarfs live underground most of the time, it seemed logical
Given my hand tremor, touching up is a constant cycle. i fix one mistake and make two more, and if i’m not careful, the model will end up thick with paint, but nevertheless, these are sweet models to work with.
