New units (Army wish list)

A king of the Wood kind of character I would be on board with, but possibly some kind of Treelord (SK already kinda has Wiltfather, but something different, i get it.), possibly some special Elf Lord with forest affinity, maybe even a Elf half become forest creature or something … but what I would hope for is that we don’t just get a carbon copy GW Orion.

I kinda like when Mantic/KoW does it’s own creative thing/spin on the classic fantasy armies more than when they just transplant existing GW units/heroes.
(But of course I wouldn’t be against using Orion as a stand in for whatever they come up with.)

I’d just be tempted to use Orion as the wiltfather and leave regular treeman for the non LL variety

Why not do both? I know (some members of) the RC watch this forum, but this is one of the very many resources they use for implementing changes. Additions to the game (esp. new units) require a lot of playtesting and go through many iterations before being inplemented. Therefore I see threads like this (or on my blog) just as ideas to be used and changed.

For an idea to be viable, there a) needs to be a problem with a certain army list or unit that urgently needs solving OR b) a valid reason to change the game, such as Mantic producing a new model.

That siad, there’s nothing wrong with just a bit of theorycrafting and working out ideas. It’s something I occasionally like to do at a rainy evening when the wife is working and the kids are asleep. This is how my alternative brothermark ideas came into fruition.

I think if you were trying to create units in the style of Clash updates then you need to base them on units Mantic make (or are at least planning to make).

Better to create an elite giant for KoM than an upgraded mammoth.

With the Herd, I’d probably want to add back in the units that were taken out. But if I was interested in influencing a future Clash of Kings then I’d pick a unit from the FoN parent list.

Both really. Happy for fun ideas as well as serious additions/fixes. Just happy to bounce ideas around.

Guardian Brute Alpha/Bruiser/King Owlbear

Inspiring (Guardian Brutes only), a bucket of attacks, nimble, maybe an aura?

I’d love to see a support monster that gives Free Dwarfs some kind of buffs. Maybe it has a Fury aura or rally.

I know lots of people want a large cavalry unit, but I want more stuff that augments what dwarfs are already good at instead of just filling a hole with a generic unit.

Elemental Sprites

Swarm stats - Spd 6, irregular, height 1, shambling.

Earth: +1 Def
Fire: Vicious
Water: Regen 5+
Air: Fly, nimble

Verdant: Scout
Ice(icles): Ensnare

I’ve just carried across the parent unit’s special rules as I wanted to keep them fairly simple. But perhaps there is a better way to do it, to give them a specific role.

I reckon Mantic could put these out relatively easily, they’d be popular outside KoW and would boost sales of the regular elementals.

I’d be on board with that. Could make cool units and I’d love to include verdant sprites in the Elf army. Maybe add pathfinder to put them in line with the shamblers

I was trying to keep things simple, going off one stat line.

But any Forest/Verdant units should probably be handled separately to the Elementals as they exist in different lists.

So, I’d agree - add Pathfinder & Scout (but not Shambling).

Do you see Forest Sprites as mini-trees or more like fireflies?

In the meantime, I suppose you could represent them with Battlecats or Woodland Critters, list depending.

I’d be completely on board with Mini Trees … and yeah, you’re right. Mini Tree creatures could easily be used with the Battle Cats stats, hah new idea, thanks

Salamander ember sprites are effectively the fire ones

Didn’t know they were a thing!

There’s more going on here than I expected - Scout, Shambling, Vicious and a ranged attack!

Odd that the Fire Elementals don’t get a ranged attack while these and the Greater do.

Yeah, the ranged option could at least be an add-on (like abyssal dwarf golems), limited to [1] maybe?

Does it count as new units if I wish for less army lists? Instead of Forces of nature and Herd, push them together and then have theme lists which give a bonus to you for limiting units. If you take only current herd stuff the theme list gives you a bonus equal to the army rules now across all your units. If you take all FoN it does the same. There’s also the option of using support rules like the Chrone bound and Wiltfather to pass off those rules too. It might make min/maxing a little too easy, but it would cut down on a lot of bloat. There’s already so much cross over between factions many of them blur together and lack an identity of their own, merging them into a stronger core might help with this.

3rd edition already pushed that direction. It might be a stronger push in 4th where they lower the lists, but increase the themes. There’s probably some fluff conflicts, but those can be ironed out as Mantica’s faction lines not being the same as the wider worlds.

This most definately is not something done in the early stages of an edition. I’m not sure if I agree, though I do see your point in faction overlap, especially with allies being a part of the base game.

That said, please keep a “4th edition” for Kings of War quite a few years away. 3rd has just landed (especially with 2020 and 2021 being what they are) so I would not expect a 4th edition until 2025 at least…

Agreed, it’s far too early for a new edition. Using CoK to try theme forces or characters which unlock other forces elements is probably a better way to go. Like chrones unlocking abyssal and nightstalker units within a larger elf faction rather than elves being split into 3.

While I agree the Twilight Kin and especially Sylvan Kin could use some more unique options, I don’t think “remove the factions, just play elves” is the solution.

Certainly in relation to the FoN theme lists, what you get doesn’t seem better than the main one - with both SK & herd being a bit ‘whatever’ and seem to be a way to use 3rd p models than really add anything [you can easily use gw ungors as naiads and gores as salamanders in an FoN army, for example]

Unlikely to be made but I would like to see kingdoms of men rules for a general on a chariot. Much like the goblin king on a chariot but with slightly different stats.
