I’m rapidly approaching 2300 points painted for Undead and am looking for another project to sink my teeth into next year. Thematically, I want to try swamp elves inspired by Rune’s Buckmarsh with Oathmark elves for rank-and-file infantry and cavalry and Mantic’s Trident Realms for weirdo “air elementals” (Dambusters) and a smattering of lizardmen I already own plus some cool models I’ve resisted buying for a couple years. Naturally, 4 regiments of Riverguard is very appealing to me, but would that be fun? I only have a few games under my belt so while the 7", 12 attacks with CS looks good to me on paper, I’m worried it’s actually terrible to play since 4 of anything seems like too much, and it will leave me exhausted at the table.
Any ideas on how well it would work at a casual table? Fun and fluffy or overkill one way or another? Would it be better to just play Trident Realms and proxy in Naiads or something with elves?
Haha, I sure haven’t! Instead, I took a 6 week break from the hobby and am still not finished with my Undead (one more regiment of Wights, finishing touches on the heroes, and a whole lot of basing).
So far the only things I’ve done for the project are acquire a whole bunch of scrap copper wire for basing trees and messing around with two proxy ambush lists with a friend. I have one more move this year so hopefully I’ll be starting on this project in earnest by June.
For sure, life, including moving, are the main issues when it comes to hobbying! I myself had to take a whole 6 months or so away from the hobby just now because of changing jobs and moving, in addition to whatever is normally included in life. But it’s all coming back now when things are settling - I got to field my Buckmarsh at an event (5 games, 8 players, very casual but great fun) as Varangur and was very pleasantly surprised (emphasis on surprise) to bring back a podium!
But you know it’s time to commit a bit more to the hobby when you’re thinking about ordering 20 new knights from a local 3d printer, considering Mantic’s crow cavalry and thinking of getting another toad-hydra “just because”, despite never having finished the models I started before christmas… It’s what it is.
Let us know if you ever get to start the project! The bog theme seems to be something a lot of people are interested in, and for good reason. Can’t hurt to have more in the world!
I’m slowly doing swamp vibe TR using gw skinks as naiads - easy enough to proxy elf spearmen as ensnarers and gladestalkers as heartpiercers if you want to switch between SK and TR.
