Cyberactivity's Twilight Kin: The Shadow Blades

That looks fantastic!
The purple scales are a great colour choice with the skin and both are well painted.

What are you using it as?

Awesome stuff

@DarkBlack its on a chariot legion base, so allied orc or ogre chariots I’d presume (its what my similarly based mumak would get used as)

@DarkBlack yeah it’s on a chariot legion so I’ll probably use it as fighting ogre or orc chariot legion.

So with that painted, if classing as Ogre Chariot Legion at 310pts, that brings up the total painted this year to 1865pts.

Not too bad. Puts me on track for about 3.5k pts painted this year in theory if keep at this pace.

I’m not sure what to paint next. I’ve got 3 snow troll primes that are nearly finished but are dull to paint.

I’ve got an official Dreadfiend model that I could tackle. It did well in the games I played recently.

I’m currently waiting on new Tormentors and Ravengers. When they come i could do them all at once with the Dreadfiend as they all have the same base colours so should be easier to do them all together (although still a lot of work due to numbers).

Got another tournament coming up however they won’t be using the new NS rules. So couple of choices are to take a list using stuff that hasn’t changed or take a non-NS army. Not sure best course of action.

Decided that I wanted to take the toad dragon to the next event as it’s one that is more hobby oriented.

As such I wrote a Ogre list that it would work in.

Only problem was that I really needed a chariot hero model to make the list work.

So I used an old conversion, fixed some of the paint issues and rebased it:

That’s 200pts of Ogre chariot hero goodness.

Takes total for the year up to 2065pts too.

That conversion is brilliant! The green stuff is all looking great.

Using the “Nurgly” stuff as ogres is a good idea.
I was wondering how they would fit into your nightstalkers.

Great weird juggernaut conversion, A+ gribbly weirdness.

wow, that looks awesome

Thank you all for the kind words.

The model has been far more popular than I expected.

He will see the table top for the first time in over a decade this Sunday coming at my next tournament.

So I’ve taken delivery of 2 boxes of Tormentors and 2 boxes of Ravengers.

Got another box of Ravengers on order.

Tormentors I’ll make 3 troops and 2 regiments. That clocks in at about 840pts.

Might make up the Dreadfiend model too. It was decent in my list when I took it to the last tournament, and the model is quite imposing. Only hesitation is that I’ve got 3 models already to play that part.

So I attended the Pride of the Shire 2 tournament at the weekend.

3 game, 2.3k pts. No new NS list.

Last year the onus was on hobby more than gaming. All the prize support went on hobby awards. Last year I won best unit with my Portal of Despair.

This time round had the choice of going for a hobby award or focusing on the gaming side. Since this event encourages hobby, I thought I’d lean into that and see if I could build a list around using it. So I wrote a 2.3k pts Ogre army and submitted it in the hopes the Toad Dragon would help me retain my Best Unit win from the previous event.

Yes, it’s not subtle. But it should be simple enough for me to use… hopefully.

Game 1 Vs Geoff (Salamanders with Elf allies)
Hold the line scenario.

Gladestalkers are OP. That’s what I took away from the game. Between the regiment and troop they ended up killing all my chariots. It was a very bloody battle that I ended up winning 5-2 on scenario pts with about 2k pts killed of Geoff’s army.

Game 2 Vs Rob (NA)
Plunder scenario.

Dizzy height of table 2. Rob is a multi time Masters player. He’s used this list for ages and knows it extremely well. I’ve not been able to beat Rob in a game although it’s been close. 2nd game with Ogres Vs him didn’t look like it was going to go well.

Had 2 chances to win this game. Needed to roll higher than a 2 for one way (rolled a 2), and the other needed to break unit of snow foxes when I corkscrew charged them with NomNom. Out of 10 attacks I only hit once. Even with brutal it wasn’t enough. Both chances were heavily in my favour so was unlucky to not have either work.

As a result Rob won 4-3 on scenario. Kill pts we about 200pts difference in my favour (about 950 killed of mine to 1150 killed of his).

Game 3 Vs Julian (Forces of the Abyss)
Smoke and Mirrors

Down to table 4. Much more comfortable. This game was quite swingy. The chariot legion and hero bombing it up the right flank and swinging in basically won the game as they caused havoc.

Managed to get max scenario pts 7-0. Kill pts was about 1950pts to me with under 700pts of my stuff dying. It was a fun game, and was closer that it seemed in paper.

Results

So I was fielding questions about the toad dragon and the army during lunch. Really enjoyed chatting about the process of getting it painted over the course of May. They did hobby results first and I was happy to hear that I’d got nominations for most of the categories (except display board). Was over the moon to hear that I’d won best unit for the toad dragon!

Hobby Goal Mission Accomplished!

Then they announced the gaming results and I was surprised that I’d managed to get 3rd place (tied on tournament pts, but I had more kill pts as the tie breaker).

Gaming Goal Mission Accomplished!

So all in all a fantastic day.

I’m taking a similar list to a tournament in a couple of weeks as they are also quite hobby focused too. I’ve achieved my gaming goal for the season now, so can focus on more hobby goals (as I’m not going for a Master’s place).

So I’ve been assembling Ravengers and Tormentors.

I’ve got 18 Ravengers and 40 Tormentors.

I’ve assembled the all the Ravengers. I’ve only managed 10 of the Tormentors. It is not a fun kit to put together. The upside is that it comes with spare heads which means I’m able to do more Soulflayers. Should be able to get at least another 4 regiments sorted if the heads work.

Think I’m going to park the Tormentors for the moment and paint up the Ravengers and probably that Dreadfiend model too.

Can always use my Reapers for Tormentors as doubt I’d take both in the same list.

So work continues on the Ravengers. A big of a slog. Worked out I’ve over 20 stages left…

I’m also updating 2 chariots of tzeentch to act as boomer chariot troops in my nurgle ogre army. It’s been more enjoyable than I thought. Lots of extra details added.

Not sure about adding more details using the airbrush. Mainly the purple fades on the screamers back fins.

those look great @Cyberactivity

Thanks. I’ve done a bit more on them now. Might push and try and get them completed this week.

I’m also updating the paint job on 2 tzeentch chariots which will be boomer chariot troops. Just need to find 2 good bits of slate that I can use to change the angle that they’d sit on the base. Still in 2 minds if I should do the extra airbrush work on them or if it’s going to be too tricky due to the way the models are.

All in I’ve about 1.5k pts of models on my hobby desk that I’m working on. Once completed think that will take me up to just over 3.5k pts painted this year (which was my original target for the year).

Then need to decide what to do afterwards. Tormentors and a Dreadfiend are probably the way to go, even though the thought of assembling the Tormentors is really off putting.

With the Ravengers painted up that’s an additional 1175pts done:

That make a total of 3240pts painted this year.

Now what to paint next…

This is them in box number 4 next to the other butchers:

Well I’ve started to assemble the Tormentors. Think I’ve found a method that works.

  1. Get 5 little pots and label them A - E.
  2. Clip off all the sprues the same part for model A and place that part in pot A.
  3. Cycle through all the sprues until you’ve got all the parts for model A (either stabby talon arms or regular arms/hands, and either split head/open maw or regular head depending on if you’re making reapers or tormentors).
  4. Repeat steps 2&3 for models B - E putting the parts in their corresponding pot.
  5. Take pot A and group together each part i.e all the left arms together
  6. Clean up each group of parts
  7. Do the same assembly stage to each model A i.e. glue left arm on the body for all model As you have
  8. Repeat doing the same assembly stage until all assembly stages completed for all model A
  9. Repeat steps 5 - 8 for models B - E in turn.

Just remember:

It’s easier to clean up the parts before gluing the model together.

The bottom of each leg needs to be in line with the ground and each other.

Use the box to see what the model should roughly look like. That will help the assembling.

You can get a slight variation in the models by a small adjustment of arm or head placement.

Whatever you do, don’t just clip everything off the sprue

Be methodical, and take your time. These are fiddly models and the cleanup is a bit awkward.

You should have 5 sets of arms and 5 heads leftover; as well as some terrain bits. This is expected

Found that that the arms and (most) heads are pretty interchangeable, as are the pairs of back spines, but if you mix up the legs & bodies its a nightmare

That is a significant number of them.
Looks great!

That’s interesting.
I found the new butchers to be similar.
Legs have to go with a certain body, but heads are interchangeable.
The arms fit best with the matching model, but can be made to work if one wants them swapped around.

Yeah, the arms and heads work on any of the models. You can get enough variety even by using the same correct arms just through the placement.

Was going to switch up the heads but now I’ve started to assemble them I can’t be bothered to mess around with different heads for the different bodies.
