So a bit of an update.
Haven’t painted anything since finishing the Ravengers.
I’ve finished assembling the Tormentors, and a further 4 units of Soulflayers.
Managed to attend a doubles tournament on the Saturday just gone, so here is a little write-up…
Roll Out The Double Barrels
Doubles tournament held at Dark Sphere in London. 2 x 1k pts lists. One inspiring hero gets promoted to supreme force commander, who gains very inspiring and can inspire both “halves” of the army. Otherwise each half treats the other as an ally for the purpose of spells/auras etc. Also, no duplicate artifacts.
My teammate was the infamous and current UK Master & #1 ranked player Chris Lynch.
We were meant to have teamed up at the Herts doubles event but I fell seriously ill with COVID so couldn’t attend. Chris still took my army and came 2nd playing on his lonesome.
So this was the event for us to finally team up.
The lists:
Team Unbalanced & OP
My side (Unbalanced):
Chris’s army (OP):
Game 1: Invade Vs Rusty & Tony, NS & RFO
Funnily enough I’d asked about how we would handle Rusty’s side of the army as he had 3 hordes of butchers, one of which had the crystal, one was nimble. He was also rocking a unit of Dopplegangers with staying stone and to round it out a Planar Apparition. Tony’s side was the RFO which was super killy and included a horde of legionaries with elite and Thonnar.
We intermingled our units. My 2 soulflayers going behind the revenants. The goreblight in the middle with the foot vampire. The Shadowhulk went left flank and the fiends on the right with the flying vampire. Shakira went fairly middle so she could fly and support either flank.
Hilariously on our first turn we moved Shakira near the Shadowhulk and on the first turn Rusty mind fogged her, hit, then rolled double 6 to remove her from the game…then showing off rolled double 6 again (we are pretty sure she wasn’t inspired so it was just rubbing salt in the wound).
We ended up flank charging with a unit of Soulflayers into the flank of the crystal butchers to kill them and hold up the rest of the RFO, who were getting flanked and taken apart by the fiends which eventually came unstuck and sold there life to cause a decent amount of damage.
At the end of the game only Thonnar survived from the opposing team. We got enough units into the other half to get a max win.
15 for the win, +4 for Kills, +4 for Scenario = 23pts
Game 2: Salt the Earth Vs Stephen & Nigel, Halflings & Undead
We made a couple mistakes early doors. Chris didn’t hear that they had a wild charge aura hero and accidentally left a horde of revenants in charge range of both units of hot air balloons. Those things are decent.
Luckily my units came to the rescue. We ended up losing about half of the undead side of the army whilst the NS half was left fully in tact. Our opponents hilariously kept burning tokens so ended up with only 3 left available which we had control of at the end of the game.
15 for the win, +4 for Kills, +3 for Scenario = 22pts
Game 3: Kill & Assassinate Vs Matt & Steven, FoA & NS
Our opponents list had a lot of shooting. A lot of steady aim 4+ shooting. They also had more drops than us (think we had a fairly elite army). They chose to kind of castle up on our left flank. This kind of worked in our favour as we would ultimately give them one decent round of shooting before we reach their lines and start the grind.
We did have a bit of luck with the Shadowhulk surviving when our opponents rolled 1 under it’s nerve in 2 different rounds.
The opposite to game 2 happened and all the casualties from our side came from the NS contingent and the Undead survived unscathed.
We killed their general and had enough kills for another max win.
15 for the win, +4 for Kills, +4 for Scenario = 23pts
So the results were in…
On the hobby front I was pleasantly surprised that I came 2nd best unit for my unit of fiends. This was their first outing and I’m really glad people liked them. I’d tied with Rusty and his Mindscreech model, just he won on the tie breaker vote. It was a well deserved win and funnily enough we both voted for the others best unit.
Interestingly the Mindscreech model is the whole reason Rusty wanted to collect Nightstalkers. So it’s great that a model that means so much picked up an award.
Couldn’t feel too bad since it was then confirmed the Chris & I had come in 1st place. We won some nice barrel tankers and beverage to go in it:
Justin won best army with his RFO:
It was a great day and it was nice to be able to relax a bit and play some games. I’ve had a mix bag of tournaments recently, so it was nice to have an enjoyable day and literally learn from the Master.
