Cyberactivity's Twilight Kin: The Shadow Blades

So a bit of an update.

Haven’t painted anything since finishing the Ravengers.

I’ve finished assembling the Tormentors, and a further 4 units of Soulflayers.

Managed to attend a doubles tournament on the Saturday just gone, so here is a little write-up…

Roll Out The Double Barrels

Doubles tournament held at Dark Sphere in London. 2 x 1k pts lists. One inspiring hero gets promoted to supreme force commander, who gains very inspiring and can inspire both “halves” of the army. Otherwise each half treats the other as an ally for the purpose of spells/auras etc. Also, no duplicate artifacts.

My teammate was the infamous and current UK Master & #1 ranked player Chris Lynch.

We were meant to have teamed up at the Herts doubles event but I fell seriously ill with COVID so couldn’t attend. Chris still took my army and came 2nd playing on his lonesome.

So this was the event for us to finally team up.

The lists:

Team Unbalanced & OP

My side (Unbalanced):

Chris’s army (OP):

Game 1: Invade Vs Rusty & Tony, NS & RFO

Funnily enough I’d asked about how we would handle Rusty’s side of the army as he had 3 hordes of butchers, one of which had the crystal, one was nimble. He was also rocking a unit of Dopplegangers with staying stone and to round it out a Planar Apparition. Tony’s side was the RFO which was super killy and included a horde of legionaries with elite and Thonnar.

We intermingled our units. My 2 soulflayers going behind the revenants. The goreblight in the middle with the foot vampire. The Shadowhulk went left flank and the fiends on the right with the flying vampire. Shakira went fairly middle so she could fly and support either flank.

Hilariously on our first turn we moved Shakira near the Shadowhulk and on the first turn Rusty mind fogged her, hit, then rolled double 6 to remove her from the game…then showing off rolled double 6 again (we are pretty sure she wasn’t inspired so it was just rubbing salt in the wound).

We ended up flank charging with a unit of Soulflayers into the flank of the crystal butchers to kill them and hold up the rest of the RFO, who were getting flanked and taken apart by the fiends which eventually came unstuck and sold there life to cause a decent amount of damage.

At the end of the game only Thonnar survived from the opposing team. We got enough units into the other half to get a max win.

15 for the win, +4 for Kills, +4 for Scenario = 23pts

Game 2: Salt the Earth Vs Stephen & Nigel, Halflings & Undead

We made a couple mistakes early doors. Chris didn’t hear that they had a wild charge aura hero and accidentally left a horde of revenants in charge range of both units of hot air balloons. Those things are decent.

Luckily my units came to the rescue. We ended up losing about half of the undead side of the army whilst the NS half was left fully in tact. Our opponents hilariously kept burning tokens so ended up with only 3 left available which we had control of at the end of the game.

15 for the win, +4 for Kills, +3 for Scenario = 22pts

Game 3: Kill & Assassinate Vs Matt & Steven, FoA & NS

Our opponents list had a lot of shooting. A lot of steady aim 4+ shooting. They also had more drops than us (think we had a fairly elite army). They chose to kind of castle up on our left flank. This kind of worked in our favour as we would ultimately give them one decent round of shooting before we reach their lines and start the grind.

We did have a bit of luck with the Shadowhulk surviving when our opponents rolled 1 under it’s nerve in 2 different rounds.

The opposite to game 2 happened and all the casualties from our side came from the NS contingent and the Undead survived unscathed.

We killed their general and had enough kills for another max win.

15 for the win, +4 for Kills, +4 for Scenario = 23pts

So the results were in…

On the hobby front I was pleasantly surprised that I came 2nd best unit for my unit of fiends. This was their first outing and I’m really glad people liked them. I’d tied with Rusty and his Mindscreech model, just he won on the tie breaker vote. It was a well deserved win and funnily enough we both voted for the others best unit.

Interestingly the Mindscreech model is the whole reason Rusty wanted to collect Nightstalkers. So it’s great that a model that means so much picked up an award.

Couldn’t feel too bad since it was then confirmed the Chris & I had come in 1st place. We won some nice barrel tankers and beverage to go in it:

Justin won best army with his RFO:

It was a great day and it was nice to be able to relax a bit and play some games. I’ve had a mix bag of tournaments recently, so it was nice to have an enjoyable day and literally learn from the Master.

that’s class !!

It was both funny and annoying since she had only moved once and I thought she was pretty safe.

The fact that Rusty rolled double 6 twice was just the icing on the cake.

Cheers for the report and again for the placement! Quite a few good looking teams, yours included. Love those Fiends, was going to say I haven’t seen them in a while but I guess for good reason

I’ve also stolen those tournament rules for my buddy who runs local events. We were talking about doing a doubles event and I like the tweaks here.

Cheers.

I’ve been taking Ogres to a few singles events to get use out of the Ogre chariot legion/Toad Dragon. As a result the Nightstalkers have taken a bit of a backseat.

The standard of hobby/painting even at this event was really high so I was low key delighted to be in the running for a hobby award let alone to tie for best unit in the first instance.

Problem I’m having is not being able to really settle on a NS list that suits my play style enough. The list I took to one of the recent events was pretty solid. Might end up trying to adjust it to get it to a place I’m happy with.

Well done on the win and well deserved on the painting award.

I quite like your teammate’s army too; I naturally assumed abyssals or Varangur for Nurgle armies, but undead makes so much sense now that I think of it.

So finally got round to basing my newly updated Tzeentch chariots. They will act as 2 troops of boomer chariots for my Nurgle Ogre Army…

That makes 290pts for the pair. Takes the total painted this year up to 3,530pts. Think that keeps me on track to possibly make 5k pts this year.

The enthusiasm and ingenuity within this thread is always an inspiration.

It feels as if your nightstalkers have likely influenced my own scheme…

Thank you for the kind words.

So been a while. These last few units have taken a while as lacked the enthusiasm as the kits were a nightmare to assemble.

Just varnish to go and then the 4 troops and 2 regiments of tormentors are done.

Once varnished I’ll take some better pictures.

This is actually an extra 1k pts on the nose. 4,530pts painted this year.

With these done that’s all options in the Nightstalker list done with at least 3 of every unit available fully painted. Comes in at over 15k pts fully painted without any items or upgrades.

Still got 4 more regiments of Soulflayers assembled and 3 Mantic Dreadfiends ready to be assembled/painted to add to the army (so probably another 1k pts).

When I get a chance I’ll have to get some pictures of the whole army together.

Varnish done. These will now be going in the completed box.

@Cyberactivity a Great looking army! That scheme really makes them pop.
Also I love the critters spewing forth from the portal, a very cool conversion

Thank you.

I’ve got another bone portal to use on my basing. Not sure how to use it now. I’ve got some spare hands and heads. Don’t have enough for half a body though

The main reason I used half the body here was that I seemed to lose a leg from the model. Couldn’t find it anywhere. This was my solution to be able to use the model and not have to worry about the missing leg.

Next up on my desk is the Lord of Nightmares and 3 x Dreadfiends. I’m waiting on some missing parts for one of the Dreadfiends. Hopefully they’ll come today so I can do some hobby this weekend as I don’t want to stay them without the model being complete.

So it’s been a long while.

After starting the 3 Dreadfiends and Mikayel model at the end of November I was taken ill and had to have emergency surgery. As a result intended up taking December, January, and part of February off of work. All hobby and gaming came to a halt too.

I’ve been back to work for a couple of months and earlier this week managed to motivate myself to put some paint on the models of my desk that have been staring at me for all that time. I’m now just trying to get them done so I can focus on something new.

So this is the current WIP state. So have two layers of highlights on the bone to do. Then base and add saliva/blood effects to the Dreadfiends (and of course varnish them).

Did manage to attend my first tournament of 2024 a few weeks ago. Kings of Herts events are always a really well run event. Unfortunately I’ve had a series of medical issues for the last two events. First one I caught COVID for the second time so couldn’t attend. The one prior to this it was so hot I got dangerously overheated and had heat stroke. I still have no idea how I managed to not pass out completely.

Anyways, I just wanted to attend the event and have 3 games of KoW to ease me back into tournaments. Was hoping that no medical issues would stop me.

Here is what the army looked like that I took to the event:

Was attempting to win a hobby award in the best unit category for the portal tormentors. I know I got some votes so was happy enough.

The tournament itself went well.

Game 1 Vs Abyssal Dwarfs WIN (big win, lots of kills)
Game 2 Vs Nightstalkers DRAW (slightly ahead on kills)
Game 3 Vs Riftforged Orcs WIN (big win, lots of kills)

I dropped 1 scenario pt in both game 1 and game 3. My opponent from game 2 (travel buddy and co-Shroud of the Reaper TO, Mark Cunningham) had the same basic results except didn’t drop the 2 scenario pts with max pts on both his wins. After we drew we basically knew that we had knocked each other out of a possible podium spot. Didn’t think I made any really stupid mistakes during the 3 games and they were all actually really great fun. So I was happy with the day and believe that I’ve broken the streak of bad luck associated with the KoH events.

Ended up 5th place out of 30 (Mark ended up 4th). It was quite a big event for a 1 dayer here in the UK. 4 Nightstalker lists in attendance. All really different. Mark had a Dopplegangers/Monster list. Mine had every living legend unit (including formation) in it. They were really different and actually interesting to play.

I’ve got our 2 day event at the start of May, which will be 2345pts. I’ve also booked to attend Barrels 3 in August which is held in London which is run by Seb. Interesting concept for the event. First game is 745pts ambush. Second game is 2255pts normal KoW. Last game is 3k pts but is simply fielding both lists as allies (big army main army, little army the ally). If you are free you should definitely come along.

Seb is also helping Mark and I organise and run the KoW events at the London GT this year. Seb is running the KoW Ambush tournament on the Friday, and Mark and I are running the 2 day KoW event on the weekend. Tickets are on sale now. You can find a link to the ticket site from the companion app events page, Masters site, or Facebook events.

I’m actually looking forward to all of the events. They actually form part of the King of London Crown Challenge, which rewards a trophy and bragging rights to the player that gets the highest total score from all remaining London based events this tournament season (starts at Shroud of the Reaper in May). Just an extra bit of fun.

Struggling to work out what to use for my ambush list at Barrels 3 to ally with my Nightstalkers. It would be very boring to just have Nightstalkers for both I think, and the event gets recorded with the big army as the main army anyways. Lots of interesting options.

I’ll hopefully finish the Dreadfiends by the weekend and will post up pictures when done. Cheers.

TL;DR was sick for 2.5 months, so no hobby. Went to tournament and came 5th/30. Back painting more Nightstalkers and organising events.

3 Dreadfiends are all finished and ready for the table.

135pts x 3 = 405pts

Now I’ve technically got 6 Dreadfiends. 3 are more elf themed so will be used with Twilight Kin.

That makes 15,710pts of painted Nightstalkers. No items or upgrades.

I’ve got 4 more soulflayer regiments ready to paint next. Otherwise considering getting some.more bloodworms to make another legion…or 2.

Mikayel all finished:

Think he stands out nicely against the elven contingent.

Need to work out what to work on next.

Mr. Nightmares looks really superb, I’ve not noticed how gribbly that sculpt is before - so many teeth :face_holding_back_tears: He does contrast well alongside those mundane purple elves.

Thank you both.

Yeah, the sculpt has some extra details when you look close. Shame that some details didn’t come out that clear so just kept them blended in.

Need to sort out a character model for the tournament. Also trying to finalise my list. Don’t know if I should go for a list similar to one I’ve played before or go for a bit of a gimmick list.

So my army list is written and packed for this upcoming weekend.

We are hosting a two day tournament in Bexley. Shroud of the Reaper - A New Hope .

I rewrote my list to include a newly finished Dreadfiend.

I’m happy with the overall look of the army.

I’ve started work of 4 regiments of Soulflayers. I’ll see how this army does. Might end up going back to using a couple regiments or might try to field all 8 regiments in a flying heavy list. We’ll see.
