Data and Dice

Are lists posted yet? Would love to take a look.

Not yet.

All lists are in and draw done. I’d expect the lists to be made public shortly - submission was via the Companion.

Jan & Bob (2 of the TOs) did a brief overview and looked at about half a dozen lists - looks like spam is on the menu!

One of the Aussie pods is going to do a more in depth look at the lists

Clast lists. Event isn’t live on Companion yet.

I haven’t had time to QA/QC much, but a quick parse of the numbers:

(and no, Florence’s 41 unit strength isn’t on the list, though I can’t wait to see how it plays on the table)

I love her list! And what an intense amount of US. This is sadly not the edition for that kind of army but I’m pulling for her to boggle some minds.

Same. It’s a wild list. I hope it ends up on stream so I can see how she uses it.

The scenarios suit it though.

Round 1: Hold the Line
Round 2: Fool’s Gold
Round 3: Plunder
Round 4: Compass Points
Round 5: Stockpile
Round 6: Control

Fool’s Gold! I’ve only played it a few times (Smoke ‘n’ Mirrors is the bluff token scenario that used to bubble up here in the NE USA) but do enjoy.

Zombie troll bomb wins Clash! Pretty sure Tom had run a similar list at the UK Masters before, so he does know what he’s doing!

9 different factions in top 10 (and a similar spread at the bottom) shows balance and player skill key.

Some purely eyeballing the results, Basilea did as predicted (2 in top 10, 5 in 30) and halflings punched nicely (3,13)

Awesome–thanks for sharing. I’ve loved the zombie trolls for a long time. They’re incredibly efficient. Not surprised to see Tom roll with them.

Fair play to him!

I wonder would he have won the tournament with any army using a concentration of their faction’s closest proxy for zombie trolls?

The shambling stands out about them, but in terms of other characteristics they don’t seem dissimilar to the hammers in a lot of other factions, which is obviously a relatively common thing in KOW.

In part the trolls are a distraction and the wights the real hammers. Being able, on turn 1, to fire a troll horde across the table messes up the defenders plans no end

The surge is key as it gives loads of flexibility in movement, flank charges etc given 4 mobile casters.

Tom is a really, really good player (finished in top 10 UK players 7 out of last 8 years - in the other he only played 4 events, winning them all!) so definitely can get the best out of the list.

It’s all about the shambling. His list had over 40 surge…

Exactly. He’s piloted lots of list to success (I’m thinking about good runs with Northern Alliance and Brothermark as well as Undead). He’s just a fantastic player.

For recap:

I’ve been on the road the past two weeks for work, but a quick writeup of the UK COK results here.

Latest Data & Dice dive: KoW events are bigger, armies are diverse, and the player base keeps growing. The numbers say we’re heading into 4th edition from a position of strength.

I prepared and queued this up before 4th was announced. In under the wire?

With 4E pending, I will hold off on data analysis until we actually see the rules and stats. But some quick, qualitative thoughts on the transition and what to watch:

Between waiting for 4th ed, needing to rewrite the underlying analytics code, and then a promotion at work (for better or worse, my 6th role since May 2022), I haven’t been as active as I’d like. That said, here’s a quick post-mortem on 3rd ed:

I saw some discussion on fanatics about a 9% cost inflation in 4e vs 3e, with some Tom Annis analysis. I did some matching between unit type-size from the latest edition to what we have in 4e and parsed the data here:

The main takeaway: the average unit has increase by 15%, but that’s heavy on the toys side–core units, esp infantry and heavy infantry, stayed the same or got cheaper. The overall inflation is lower than 15% because the army composition won’t be the same, but it’s a good baseline number to keep in mind.

I recently played three games with @TastyBagel at 1,000 points, and they were really fun–I’ve never dabbled in a game that small, but my inclination is that smaller games are more dynamic and quicker. I’d love to see the tournament scene settle out at 2k points where people have to make tough choices instead of going all the way to 2.5k.
