December Dream! - painting topic

Did a quick paintjob on the infernox model this afternoon. Will try him out, while trying out the new ambush rules next weekend :relaxed:.

WIP of my Reborn Legionaries. As they are inspiring, I really wanted them to have the feel of returned epic heroes. We’ve got a standard bearer to raise the icon of the Shadowmoon and a little mutant elephant monster dragging along a sack of their stuff (weapons and things).

Only 2 more sprues of Imperial Roman Legionnaires to go.

162 Romans and Auxiliaries completed so far.

My motivation is waning like a puppy in the heat. Thankfully, I have 12 Victrix Gallic Cavalry and 3 more Celtic chariots to distract me. And if I get desperate, a couple of Elephants too.

All my Roman units are based with some flexibiliy in mind. For Hail Ceasar, they need to be two ranks deep and it is the dimensions of the shield wall that matters, usually 10 models wide, (so similar in that way to a infantry horde ) with the Celts being mainly 4 deep by 10 wide Warbands. (touch wood,) The way they have been built, they can also reform to march 2-(3-or) 4 wide, and reform into KoW type units and regiments, as well as hordes. There is a KoW event nearby next weekend, so i hope to get a game in, but i’ll need a quick revision game tomorrow to test out the new rules.

With almost 200 Romans now painted, i’m running out of steam, but putting them all on display helps me to stay motivated and finish the last twenty .

My last unit reformed from 2 man deep and 10 wide into the standard Kings of War Regiment

Inspiring work Nav! That’s so many minis to paint. I admire the way you have planned it all to fit flexibly into multiple systems. Models and bases look super clean and cohesive, great work.

Many thanks Findol. I struggled to get enough bases, as ideally you need a mix of 40x40mm and 20*40mm for the Roman Infantry side to give you the option to change formation. Ironically, half way through the latest batch, i realised that i’d made not one, but two mistakes. Firstly, my two cavalry regiments were on different sized bases, so i had to pull thm apart and rebuild into smaller 2 rider wide units instead, so they have plenty of options. The second mistake was my Preatorians, who i’d put on two heavy infantry size bases, but the unit leader and ‘command pod’ would never be in the centre for viewpoint or charge point , so i had to rebuilt that unit too, into two sections of 8 men (4 men x2 deep,) and then a slightly smaller 3 manx2 deep command unit of musician, unit standard Bearer and commander (primus pilus). Although a command is not essential for KoW, they do look better with, than without, IMHO.

Personally, i love the diarama style bases of my Kings of War armies, but i’m just not getting enough battle time if i stick to one system, so we adapt.
The last unit does need a final wash to pick up facial features etc. and a final touch up, which i can do while construction is ongoing with my chariots and celtic light cavalry

So frustrating to redo a done job!
The diorama piece of KoW is my single favourite part about it. I don’t get much time out for gaming with young children playing hockey all the time but I can make hobby time a lot more easily.
I’m glad you’ve found a way to adapt your stuff to both.

Nice @FredOslow ! Mine are still in the box awaiting to be unboxed at some future date … but i dread painting so many horses! I remember how long it took me to paint my last Cav. Regiment, so good job!

Did some work on the head and main body scales over the weekend, more productive than i’d thought for a change

Going for a slightly brownish/dusty red on the scales to match my Drakons :slightly_smiling_face:

Not actually December’s painting, but following @Cyberactivity comment about what he’d done this year, here is 2022s tally to date (includes wysiwyg and mandatory upgrades, formation points where units were specially built for the purpose, but not optional upgrades, magic or artifacts).
