IIRC commands were removed because they were progressively expensive, so command for horde was more points than for regiment and for cost of command on 5 or 6 units, you could buy another regiment/monster/war machine which was more useful than command, so most players opted for additional units, and then they changed how was Nerve tested.
It also would/could lead to confusion over multibased units as units might be built with none, one or both, but might not be reflective of the actual rules etc (KoW being indicative, rather than wysiwyg representation)
Love command groups modelled into units.
Don’t think the old 1st edition rule really suits a rank and flank game to be honest.
I still don’t see Kings of War as a Rank & Flank game, more a Block & Flank game.
I think the main reason for command groups to be removed was that they cancelled out each other when units got into melee, so we’re essentially pointless. +1 Nerve from a standard, then-1 due to enemy musician.
Thinkn if they had been given better rules, which may have still seen them.
Is rank and flank not the same as a block game?
I’ve confused myself maybe.
Yeah Kow is a classic block game (or RnF game). Going too far into modeling things that have game effects onto blocks isn’t a great idea. Your moving into a different style of game - diluting the elegancy of the game in my opinion. Normal command, standard, musician, etc “bonus” should be built into the block stat.
For me to be a ‘Rank’ game it means that the frontage of the unit can be extended/contracted if need be. Also a unit gains
benefit in melee for their ranks and those bonuses can be denied by the enemy.
Some ‘Block’ games allow for units to do the above, Warmaster being a great example of this. A unit came in 3 blocks, and how those blocks were formed up during a game impacted on their performance.
Nearly done my Treeleapers for Sylvan Kin! Most likely making a second troop of these, I love the way they turned out.
Good use of that warcry warband @Findol! I would never have thought treeleapers looking at the GW paint job, but you have really made it work!
Thanks! I really loved the sculpts and I like that they bring a darker tone to the Sylvan kin. They’ve been fun to work on and drybrushing the feathers is super satisfying.
Those look really fun to paint.
The job you’ve done on them is fantastic.
Couldn’t help taking a break from dwarf infantry and putting together this bad boy.
Another top quality mini from Mantic. Very posable.
Do you know how you’re planning on painting the crystals and doing any greenery? (have a similar project on the go)
Looks v dynamic with the fists raised! (I’d probably pose one on the ground, maybe rested on a rock pile to balance out the top and bottom of the mini)
I nearly glued it in the hunched look on the box but I thought the action pose looked a bit better. Rocks help with the feet which won’t level with the base if you straighten the pose.
Super mini. Tons of options to get it looking different ways.
I’m going blue with the crystals. Trying to keep them complementing the blue uniforms of my core dwarfs. Will be jumping on a tutorial or two on YouTube. Would welcome any guides anyone has. Crystals will make or break this mini - ones on the box art aren’t great to be honest.
Will be adding clump foliage to the mini and any other appropriate basing material - something I don’t normally do. I’ll be messing around with vallejo pigments for this one as well.
For mine I went with red to match the army (red and black)
I just highlighted up as usual but after the paint was dry I gave the crystals 3 coats of Tamiya gloss varnish to make them really shiny.

Looking good, glad to hear it is very posable, got one myself (unopened as of yet).
Looking forward to see how you paint up yours.
Loving the rocks on rocks!
Prepped two regiments of ordinary earth elementals as well while I had the tools out. Lots of pinning on these but I enjoy metal miniatures so no big deal.
Summer showers making the primer act a bit funny with the humidity.
Back to the infantry…
Those are fantastic Rusty.
I sometimes forget how effective varnish coats can be at making parts of a miniature pop. Will be taking this route myself after seeing your pictures.
